Tottenham Hotspur took on Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium earlier tonight looking to begin their UEFA Champions League campaign with a win on the road. Spurs started the encounter on the front foot and took the lead via Harry Kane’s penalty in the 26th minute. Lucas Moura doubled Spurs’ advantage just four minutes later when he scored with an emphatic finish. However, the home side got a goal back just before half-time courtesy of Daniel Podence.
The Turkish side came out strong in the second half and managed to equalise after Mathieu Valbuena successfully converted from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Both teams battled hard but couldn’t add to their goal tally as the match finished honours even with a 2-2 scoreline after the full-time whistle.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham player performed during the contest against Olympiacos.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 6/10
The French keeper made a couple of good saves in the first half but couldn’t do much about both of Olympiacos’ goals on the night.
RB: Davinson Sánchez – 4/10
He didn’t look comfortable at the right-back position, and it showed in his game. Sanchez committed too many fouls and looked shaky at the back when left isolated in a 1v1 situation.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 6/10
The Belgian centre-back put his body on the line and made some crucial clearances for his side. He was not accountable for any of the goals that Spurs conceded on the night.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 4/10
The Belgian defensive ace was at fault when he failed to close down Podence in the lead-up to his goal before half-time. He was also guilty of conceding the penalty in the second half.
LB: Ben Davies – 7/10
The Spurs left-back pressed the opposition quite effectively and played an instrumental role behind Lucas Moura’s goal in the first half. However, he was a bit vulnerable defensively at the back.
CM: Harry Winks – 7/10
He put in a solid shift defensively but lacked invention with his passes in the Olympiacos half.
CM: Tanguy NDombele – 6.5/10
The Spurs new boy had a good game at the heart of Pochettino’s midfield before being subbed at the hour mark.
RM: Lucas Moura – 7/10
The Brazilian wide player was sensational in the first half when he scored with a fantastic strike. However, he was not as effective after the half-time break.
CAM: Christian Eriksen – 4/10
The Denmark international was wasteful with the ball and struggled to create any meaningful opportunities going forward.
LM: Dele Alli – 6/10
He went close to scoring with his attempt from long range. The English playmaker failed to orchestrate too many clear-cut chances in the opposition half.
ST: Harry Kane – 6.5/10
The English centre-forward stepped up to convert the penalty in the first half. However, he squandered some decent opportunities to score as well.
Substitutes:
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
The Frenchman replaced Ndombele in the second half and added some fresh legs to the Tottenham midfield.
LM: Heung-min Son – 5/10
The South Korean forward did not manage to make an impact in the game.
RM: Erik Lamela – 6/10
The Argentine playmaker tested the Olympiacos keeper after coming off the bench for the final quarter of the contest.
