In a recent interview (mentioned by the Daily Express), Manchester United full-back Ashley Young has backed Harry Maguire to be a future skipper at Old Trafford and said, “You know, I think the manager’s said that about him. He talks non-stop, he’s a real leader and he can play as well.
“The style of play we use, we use the centre-halves a lot to play out from the back and everybody has got confidence in him.”
Maguire’s Impressive Start To Life At Manchester
The England international has put in a couple of impressive displays since his big-money move from Leicester City earlier this summer. He has fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s style of play well at the Theatre of Dreams and has formed a strong partnership with Victor Lindelof at the heart of the Red Devils backline.
Maguire was at his best on Saturday when he managed to keep a clean sheet against his former club. He has already made four appearances for the Mancunian outfit this term on all fronts. The ex-Barnsley youth product has been in a rich vein of form defensively as he is currently averaging 0.8 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 4.8 clearances per game for Solskjaer’s team in the English top-flight this term (stats via whoscored).
The 26-year-old has also established himself as a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s England national side and helped his nation reach the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia last summer. He has earned 22 international caps for the Three Lions and has scored one goal in the process.
Will The English Defensive Ace Be A Good Leader For Man United?
Maguire can be a leader at the back as he is vocal and has the ability to set-up his backline well when defending deep inside his own half. He is a reliable presence inside his own box and can make some vital clearances for his side. The English centre-back is also quite good with his feet and can play the ball out from the back.
The Man United new signing has all the skillset required to be a success story at the Theatre of Dreams. For now, Maguire needs to be consistent with his performances on the field so that he can earn the respect of all his teammates. The England international is a natural leader, so he will be a great captain for the Red Devils if Solskjaer decides to hand him the arm-band someday.
