We are in the final few hours of the transfer window and Rangers were handed a reality check by the champions Celtic yesterday in the Old Firm derby. However, off the pitch, the Gers did most of their business early, and they have been able to hold on to their key players like Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier.
However, there was one signing which the fans would have loved to see happening, and that was Ryan Kent. The Liverpool winger had a stellar last campaign which saw him win Rangers’ young player of the season. However, Liverpool have decided not to send the winger on loan again this season.
Rangers recently made it to the Europa League main draws, and there were certain rumours that Rangers might have enough money now to sign the winger permanently in the last few hours of the transfer window. However, Gerrard rebuffed such suggestions and maintained that they could only sign the English winger on loan.
Gerrard on the possibility of signing Kent late in the window
The Rangers boss recently said (The Express), ”Nothing has changed on the Ryan Kent situation. We’d love to have him here, but Liverpool’s stance hasn’t changed. Unless we were to get a phone call on that one, it’s as it was.”
”Just because we qualified (for the Europa League) doesn’t mean the board are at the front door with a bag full of money for me. Sometimes you have to realise they gave us the support to try to put us in the position to qualify. It doesn’t mean we go knocking on the door for more.”
Why Rangers are well covered?
The Gers have been quite shrewd with their transfer business as they have managed to sign quite a few players on a free transfer and on loan. Reports mention that Liverpool have set an asking price of £7m for Kent which seems to be too much for the Bears. Rangers are set to receive a windfall of £10m for making it to the Europa League. And there is a case that could be made that the club should have funded Kent’s move with that money.
However, Rangers have had a bright start to the season barring yesterday’s results. Moreover, they have signed wingers like Jordan Jones, Sheyi Ojo, Jake Hastie and Brandon Barker. Ojo and Jones have done well. Going by results so far, it seems that Rangers will be able to cope without the signing of Kent. However, Kent is someone who could have taken this team to a different level.
