According to a recent report by the Sun, Liverpool are keeping a close eye on PSV Eindhoven striker Donyell Malen. However, the same source has also claimed that the Reds will face stiff competition from Arsenal in pursuit of the Dutch Eredisivie centre-forward.
The Incredible Rise Of Donyell Malen In Dutch Football
The Wieringen-born talent came through the youth ranks of AFC Ajax before joining Arsenal as a teenager in the summer of 2015. However, he failed to prove his worth at the Emirates Stadium and was shipped out to PSV back in 2017. Since joining the Dutch giants, the teenage sensation has gradually transformed himself into a prolific goal-scorer at the Philips Stadium.
Malen has made a fantastic start to this campaign after putting in some match-winning displays for PSV in the Dutch top-flight. The 20-year-old has scored 11 goals and grabbed four assists in 14 appearances for Mark van Bommel’s side this season.
At such a tender age, Malen has also managed to earn two international caps for the Netherlands national side and has registered one goal for his nation thus far.
What Will The Dutch Whizkid Add To Jurgen Klopp’s Team At Merseyside?
Malen is blessed with blistering pace and can dribble with the ball at high speed to cause a lot of problems for the opposition defenders. He can also hold the ball up well inside the opposition penalty box and is not afraid to shoot when an opportunity presents itself. The Dutch rising star has been a consistent goalscorer for PSV this season. So if he can continue making progress in the Eredivisie, then he would deserve another chance to prove his worth in the Premier League someday.
The addition of a player of Malen’s potential will undeniably add more depth to Jurgen Klopp’s squad at Anfield. The Dutch talent will not only be a good back up for Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino but will also add more goals to their side in the coming years.
However, the jury is still out on whether Malen will be able to cope with the physicality and high intensity of English football. Klopp should only consider making a move for the striker if he can continue to score goals consistently for PSV during this campaign.
