According to a recent report by the Turkish newspaper Gunes (via the Daily Post), Liverpool are not the only ones looking to secure the services of Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. The same source has claimed that the Reds will face stiff competition from Juventus in pursuit of the Turkish shot-stopper.
Ugurcan Cakir’s Rapid Rise In Turkish Football
Cakir joined the Trabzonspor youth set-up at a young age from Yamanspor in the summer transfer window of 2011. The 23-year-old has spent his whole playing career in Turkey as he battled his way up the youth ranks of Trabzonspor. He finally managed to taste some senior football at the Medical Park Stadium back in 2014.
Cakir has made a total of 41 appearances for the Turkish giants, conceding 51 goals while earning nine clean sheets in multiple competitions. The Antalya born goalie has represented Turkey at various youth ranks before going on to make one appearance for his country at the senior level.
The European shot-stopper has experienced some of the best years of his playing career at Trabzonspor last season when he put in some memorable performances to help his club attain a fourth-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig. However, Cakir has not enjoyed a great start to his season after he shipped in nine goals in seven appearances without securing a clean sheet at the back so far.
What Will The Turkish Prospect Add To Klopp’s Team?
Cakir has quick reflexes which allow him to pull off some instinctive saves at the back. He can distribute the ball accurately and remains composed when being chased down by the opposition. However, the Turkish sensation needs to work on his ball-handling skills if he wants to become a world-class keeper someday.
At 23, Cakir is about to enter the prime years of his playing career which the Merseyside heavyweights could look to benefit from over the next few campaigns. The Super Lig rising star has all the makings of a top goalkeeper so Klopp should consider launching an offer for his services when the transfer window reopens in January.
Is Cakir Worth The Fight?
The Turkish goalie has already shown that he can be a reliable presence at the back so the Reds could make him play second-fiddle to Alisson Becker if they manage to fend off competition from Juventus. There is no doubt that Cakir is a player worth fighting for as he has the potential to become a future star in European football.
