Chelsea entertained Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge earlier today hoping to get their first win of this campaign in front of their home supporters. The Pensioners made a bright start to the contest but couldn’t find the back of the net in the first half.
However, Frank Lampard’s team talk at half-time did the trick as Jorginho made a breakthrough for his side in the 49th minute when he comfortably converted his spot-kick. Willian managed to kill the game off in the 75th minute when he scored via his deflected attempt from close range. The match ended with Chelsea emerging victorious with a 2-0 scoreline.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player performed during the contest against the Seagulls.
GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga – 7/10
The Spanish keeper was hardly tested during the game, but he did his job when called into action. It was a welcome clean sheet at home for the Chelsea shot-stopper.
RB: César Azpilicueta – 6.5/10
The Pensioners skipper worked his socks off down the right flank and managed to deliver a few inviting crosses into the Brighton penalty box. However, he looked a bit shaky when defending inside his own half.
CB: Andreas Christensen – 7/10
He kept his composure to put in a commanding display at the heart of the Chelsea backline. Christensen has also got a clean sheet to show for his efforts.
CB: Fikayo Tomori – 7/10
The English centre-back was dominant in the air and put in another impressive performance at the back. He hardly gave away possession when playing the ball out from defence.
LB: Marcos Alonso – 5.5/10
The Spaniard could have been given his marching orders for his elbow on Martin Montoya. He was also guilty of missing an easy chance from six yards out.
CM: Ross Barkley – 5/10
The former Everton playmaker missed a great chance to score for his team. He was also a bit wasteful when in possession of the ball in midfield.
CM: Jorginho – 8/10
The Italian talent spread the ball accurately from the middle of the park and stepped up to convert the penalty with ease in the 49th minute. It was a match-winning display from him today.
CM: Mason Mount – 7.5/10
The English youngster earned the penalty early in the second half which helped his side claim all three points from this contest at the Bridge. He was also energetic and had a good workout in the opposition half.
RW: Pedro – 6/10
The Spaniard squandered an excellent opportunity to score when he just had the Brighton keeper to beat. He got subbed after the hour mark by Lampard.
ST: Tammy Abraham – 7/10
The English centre-forward was unfortunate not to have scored with his header that hit the post in the first half. He was a potent threat for the Brighton defenders and did well to hold the ball up in the final third.
LW: Willian – 7/10
The Brazilian playmaker caused a lot of problems for the Seagulls down the wide areas. He also found the back of the net with his deflected shot inside the final quarter of the encounter.
Substitutes:
RW: Callum Hudson-Odoi – 7/10
The English youngster came off the bench to set up Willian for Chelsea’s second goal of the contest.
CM: Mateo Kovacic – 6/10
The Croat retained possession well and did enough to see out the win for the home side.
ST: Michy Batshuayi – N/A
The Belgian striker did not have enough time to make an impact.
