Real Madrid started off their 2019/20 UEFA Champions League campaign in the worst possible manner with a 3-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. The Parisians have positioned themselves right on top of Group A with a commanding victory over Real Madrid.
Los Blancos were two goals down in the first half itself. Their very own ‘Angel’ caused them the damage they would have never imagined. Di Maria produced two sensational strikes in the first half to give the Parisians a two-goal advantage. VAR played spoilt sport for Real Madrid as a spectacular Gareth Bale volley was ruled to be a hand-ball by the Welshman.
Things did not change much in the second half for Zidane & Co. Paris Saint-Germain were quick into getting into the large spaces that opened up in midfield. Real Madrid seemed really stretched throughout the night, and that would be a massive area of concern for Zidane.
Thomas Meunier scored PSG’s third goal in the dying moments of the game to make the score-line further embarrassing for the team from the Spanish capital. Even Zizou’s substitutions were very predictable and failed to shake things up even a bit. Los Blancos seemed to be completely outplayed in all departments.
Here’s how Real Madrid players were rated in their loss against Paris Saint-Germain.
Thibaut Courtois – 7/10
The Belgian had a very busy evening at the Parc des Princes. Courtois could have done slightly better for the first goal Real conceded.
Dani Carvajal – 6/10
An extremely below-average performance from Carvajal on the night. He failed to have much impact on the game despite toiling hard.
Raphael Varane – 7/10
Varane had an average night on his return to France. He should have done better with the man-marking for the first goal.
Eder Militao – 6/10
It seems Eder Militao has not settled at Real Madrid yet. He was sluggish to the pace of the game and is still not the perfect fit for Real Madrid’s defensive problems.
Ferland Mendy – 6/10
Ferland Mendy worked hard down the left-flank but did seem to be missing the attacking mindset which Marcelo possesses.
James Rodriguez – 7/10
Much more was expected of the Colombian on the night against a tough opponent in PSG. James was nevertheless one of Real’s best players on the pitch.
Casemiro – 7/10
The Brazilian was absolutely crucial in midfield and protected Real Madrid’s inexperienced back-line to some extent.
Toni Kroos – 7/10
Kroos had a sloppy evening where he misplaced a couple of passes. The German seemed to be missing his partner in crime, Luka Modric. Kroos failed to find himself at the right places and even was unable to get the game ticking from midfield.
Gareth Bale – 8/10
One of Real Madrid’s most spirited players in the defeat. Gareth Bale seemed to be in fine form but failed to make any difference to the outcome of the game.
Karim Benzema – 6/10
The Frenchman was slow to the pace of the game and did not trouble Keylor Navas a lot. He even found the back of the net once only for the goal to be deemed offside.
Eden Hazard – 6/10
Hazard made his full-debut for Real Madrid and was a mere shadow of himself on the night. He seemed a bit rusty after the long injury spell and was taken off in the second half.
Substitutes
Lucas Vasquez – 6/10
Failed to have any impact on the game post coming on for Eden Hazard.
Luka Jovic – 5/10
Did not have any significant impact on the game post coming on.
Vinicius Junior – 5/10
Did not have any significant impact on the game post coming on.
