The transfer window is currently shut but Celtic’s star forward Odsonne Edouard is continuing to win admirers across the globe. Recently reports from the Express suggest that Italian heavyweights Napoli are considering making a bid worth £30m for him in the future.
Edouard has emerged as the undisputed number one striker at Parkhead ever since his permanent move from Paris Saint-Germain. The striker enjoyed an impressive last season where he managed 22 goals in all competitions even though the Frenchman missed some games due to injuries.
Striker on Napoli interest
Edouard recently talked about this current transfer speculation. The 21-year-old said, “I actually didn’t know about this [links to Napoli], and it doesn’t really matter. At the moment I’m a Celtic player.
I’ve got a season to play, I’ve got a long contract, I’m really happy with the way I’m playing, the set-up here and I’m really happy to play with my friends for the team. The main thing at the moment is I’m a Celtic player, and I’m happy to be a Celtic player. I’ve still got a lot to prove with Celtic, as part of the Celtic team.”
Even though the Frenchman is indicating that he is happy at Celtic, there is a certain sense of inevitability that Edouard would move away from Parkhead in the future given his inspiring performances. With top clubs like Napoli circling him, a move would be tough to ignore. However, the good thing is that the youngster is currently entirely concentrated with Celtic for now. But his future speculation will continue to rage on when the transfer window opens.
What can Lennon do?
Given the financial muscle of top European clubs, Celtic will have almost no chance of keeping hold of Edouard if a bid in the region of £30m comes in. Edouard is already their first-choice striker, but Scottish clubs have found it hard to keep hold of their best players once a club from top 5 leagues become interested.
The striker still has his contract at the club until 2022, and maybe Lennon can look to extend it further by year or two. That would ensure the Hoops get the best price for their star scorer when top clubs come in. Moussa Dembele was sold for close to £20m to Lyon, and he proved his worth in the Ligue 1 by putting in top performances. Celtic can look to make much more on Edouard given his performance, age and potential.
