Steven Gerrard’s journey at Rangers has involved a lot of ups and downs so far. However, he has built a team which can seemingly challenge Celtic’s supremacy in Scottish football. Rangers made it through to the group stages of the Europa League for two seasons in a row now much like their arch-rivals.
Given that the Glaswegian outfit has such a high profile manager, there was bound to be some rumours regarding his future. Reports in the summer emerged that Newcastle United wanted him after Rafael Benitez left the club. However, the English gaffer had no intentions of leaving Glasgow. Recently Jurgen Klopp added fuel to the rumours as he indicated that Gerrard would be his natural successor at Anfield.
Gerrard on his dream
Gerrard had his say on that story and said (Herald Scotland), ”The way I look at it; there is certainly no rush. Would it be a dream? Of course, it would. But I’m in a fantastic job right now at a huge club. I’m honoured to be the Rangers manager, very thankful and appreciative of the opportunity. I’m right in the mix of this; my head is totally on the job in hand.”
Impact of Gerrard at Rangers so far
The 39-year-old has made a positive impact on and off the pitch at Rangers so far. The Gers have signed some talented players in the last few transfer windows. With the attraction of a big name like Steven Gerrard, it is no surprise that the Glaswegian outfit has managed to recruit the likes of Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo recently. However, to win over all his critics, the manager will need to provide more tangible benefits by winning some silverware at the Ibrox.
Why The Gers Shouldn’t Need To Worry About Their Manager For Now
The Englishman has always maintained that his focus is with Rangers for the time being. Moreover, Gerrard in his playing days was known for his loyalty as he had various opportunities to leave Liverpool, but he stayed with his local side through thick and thin. Apart from that, Liverpool have Klopp under contract until 2022, so there is still plenty of time to go before Gerrard could even think about taking over as the next Liverpool boss.
One cannot completely rule out his departure, but we don’t expect Gerrard to leave midway through the season like how Brendan Rodgers did with Celtic not too long ago. If the Liverpool legend can deliver trophies this season, then his stock would undoubtedly rise which could see him be in high demand next summer. For now, we think that Rangers should not worry. The only managerial job that could probably turn Gerrard’s head right now is Liverpool’s which is still a few years away.
