James Tavernier had a glittering youth career with Leeds and Newcastle United but failed to leave an impression in England. The full-back was eventually roped in by Rangers when he was struggling at Wigan for first-team minutes. It was a low-key transfer across the border and the Gers, desperate to regain top-flight status, banked on the Englishman to occupy the right-back role in the long run.
It has been a complete change of fortune for Tavernier in Govan as he is now the club skipper having made more than 200 appearances in all competitions. Tavernier epitomises the modern-day concept of a fullback who keeps on making overlapping runs, threatens from the set-pieces and whips in pinpoint crosses inside the box. His brilliance in Scotland sparked immense speculation over a potential return to Premier League amid interest from newly-promoted Aston Villa.
Although Steven Gerrard managed to keep hold of his prized asset beyond the summer deadline, a move should not be ruled out in winter when the transfer window will reopen. He was linked to a return to Tyneside as well, but the signing of Emil Krafth must be a sigh of relief for the Ibrox faithful who are well aware of Tavernier’s significance in their bid to knock Celtic off the perch.
Why A Move To Premier League Is Still On The Cards
Dean Smith has Frédéric Guilbert and Ahmed Elmohamady as the right fullback options to select from. But the Aston Villa boss might eye further reinforcements in January to add more depth to his current set-up.
The inclusion of Tavernier would bring in a new dimension to their game considering his tireless runs from the flank and attacking attributes despite being an outright right-back. His defensive lapses might be a matter of concern, but the 27-year-old offers the flexibility to feature as a wingback which, we believe, would be his best position to operate from.
Do Rangers Have An Able Alternative Of Their Skipper?
Gerrard has wrapped up an array of signings since taking charge of this famous club. He has added depth to his set-up, increased the quality to some extent and tied down enough names to enable squad rotation. Tavernier, however, is irreplaceable for his sheer dedication, commitment and contribution.
The gaffer snapped up Matt Polster after a successful trial, but the American professional has failed to provide any sort of competition since plying his trade to Scotland. Jon Flanagan, too, is preferred on the left even though he is right-footed and predominantly a right fullback. The Bears have replacements within the team, but none matches the standard exhibited by the skipper since completing a low-key transfer back in 2015.
