Instead of adding too many reinforcements to the squad this summer, Leeds United decided to sign some key players on loan and get existing essential players on a new contract. Recently reports from Leeds Live emerged that Poland international Mateusz Klich will soon commit his long term future at Elland Road. After securing the future of Kalvin Phillips earlier, this could be seen as another critical move from the club management.
Along with Phillips, Cooper and Dallas also secured their future, so this is a key indication that Leeds United want to keep hold of their best players for the long term even if they move up a division by next season.
Mills on Klich
Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills recently gave his verdict on Klich’s new deal and said (Football Insider), ”Think he’s (Kilch) been very good, the past couple of seasons he’s been at Leeds United he’s been one of their most consistent players. He’s working hard; he’s fit, he’s consistent. Yeah, thoroughly deserved, a new deal.”
“That’s what’s important. You’re building a squad; you want to add to that. You keep everybody around you and every now, and then you add to it. They’ve got the basis of a good squad. If you don’t make players feel wanted and give them new contracts when they’ve done well, then they’re going to leave.”
A step in the right direction for the Whites?
Klich has been one of the most consistent performers since Bielsa took over. Moreover, his endurance and fitness have been second to none as he started in every Championship game last season. Not many would have assumed that the Polish midfielder would become a mainstay in the middle since the Argentine manager took over.
His energy, ability to drive the ball forward and his vision to pick out some neat passes make him a standout option. The 29-year-old managed to score ten goals last season, and Bielsa will hope that he can keep on contributing with goals and assists along with providing steel and determination at the middle of the park.
It is no surprise that based on his current performance, Klich would be handed a new deal. Mills is right that the team needs to give certain players a new contract, especially the ones who have done exceedingly well. The midfielder’s current deal will expire next summer, but the Whites might have an option to extend it for another year.
The fact that the club is looking to offer him a longer deal even though he is already 29 suggests how highly the team management and the manager rates him. Moving to the Premier League will be a big task and Klich will hope that he can deliver the goods this season.
