According to a recent report by the Turkish news outlet Aksam (translated by the Liverpool Echo), İstanbul Başakşehir F.K. are hoping to secure the services of Everton outcast Cenk Tosun when the transfer window reopens in January. The same source has claimed that the move is likely to happen if the Turkish striker continues to earn limited game time at Goodison Park in the coming weeks.
Tosun’s Disappointing Spell In English Football
The former Besiktas forward currently finds himself on the fringes of Marco Silva’s team at Merseyside. The 28-year-old is in dire need of regular first-team opportunities if he wants to reignite his career in European football.
Since joining the Toffees at the start of last year, Tosun has gone on to make 44 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, scoring nine goals while grabbing four assists across multiple competitions. The ex-Super Liga prospect has failed to be a consistent goal-scorer in the Premier League and could benefit from sealing a return back to his homeland.
The Wetzlar-born talent has a terrific goalscoring record in the Turkish Super Lig, having netted 80 goals and created 31 assists in 205 matches. Tosun has also earned 40 international caps for Turkey and has registered 15 goals for his country thus far.
What Does The Turkish Striker Offer On The Pitch?
Tosun can be an accomplished finisher inside the opposition penalty box when he is playing with confidence on the field. However, the fact remains that the Turkish frontman has struggled to find consistency with his performances in the English top-flight. Despite his recent goal-scoring concerns, he can still be a willing worker for his team. He tends to run the channels quite effectively to provide his teammates with a decent outlet on the counter.
Should The Toffees Cash In On Tosun In January?
Marco Silva currently has Moise Kean and Dominic Calvert-Lewin vying for a place in his first-team at Goodison Park. Hence, it doesn’t seem like Tosun’s current situation will improve unless he starts proving his worth on the training ground.
For now, the 28-year-old marksman moving back to Turkey seems like the only logical option as it will benefit both the player as well as the club. Everton can use the money generated from Tosun’s potential sale to bring in a promising replacement during the winter transfer period.
