According to a recent report by the Liverpool Echo, Kevin Mirallas has put an end to his seven-year spell at Everton by returning to his homeland and joining Royal Antwerp on a free transfer. The same source has also claimed that the Belgian wide player was not in Marco Silva’s first-team plans for the new season and so he has decided to end his Merseyside misery by sealing a switch to Antwerp on a one-year contract.
Mirallas’ Nightmare Spell At Goodison Park
Mirallas was on the fringes of the Toffees squad for the past couple of seasons. He went out on loan to play for Fiorentina last season but failed to make the most out of his chances in Italian football. The Belgian winger made 30 appearances for the Florence outfit in the previous term, scoring two goals while grabbing three assists on all fronts.
Since joining the Blues Of Merseyside, Mirallas has featured in a total of 186 matches, scoring 38 goals while creating 34 assists across all competitions. The 31-year-old has also represented Belgium in 60 matches and has registered ten goals for his country during his international career.
Why Mirallas’ Return To Belgium Makes Sense At This Stage Of His Career
Mirallas is in dire need of regular first-team opportunities so that he can make the most out of the twilight years of his playing career. The Belgian wide player has lost a yard of pace due to his age, but he can still be a potent threat going forward.
However, he might thrive while playing regular football in the Jupiler Pro League which will suit his playing style as it is far less intense and physical than the Premier League.
Mirallas Joins Royal Antwerp: Good Move For All Parties?
The Toffees have done well to move him on in search of greener pastures. Mirallas has also gained a lot from parting ways with Marco Silva’s side as his career was coming to a standstill at Goodison Park. At 31, the former Olympiakos talent still has a few years left in him to play at a high level.
Hence, Mirallas’ return back to his home country as a free agent could turn out to be a move that will benefit both the player and the club.
