Tottenham Hotspur travelled to the JobServe Community Stadium to face off against Colchester United earlier tonight hoping to progress into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Spurs were dominant in the first half as they created a lot of goal-scoring chances going forward. However, Mauricio Pochettino was left frustrated after his players failed to test the Colchester keeper before the half-time break as they were wasteful in the final third.
The visitors kept putting the pressure on the Colchester defenders, but they couldn’t manage to make a breakthrough in the second half. The match went to penalties, and the North London outfit crashed out of the League Cup after losing the shootout by a 4-3 scoreline.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham player performed during the contest.
GK: Paulo Gazzaniga – 6/10
The Spurs goalkeeper did not have a save to make during the 90 minutes. However, he failed to be his team’s hero during the penalty shoot-out despite saving Jevani Brown’s penalty.
CB: Eric Dier – 6/10
The English talent was asked to play as a centre-back and did enough to keep a clean sheet. He passed the ball accurately from the back as well.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 7/10
He was a commanding presence inside his own half and performed well to keep a shutout at the back.
CB: Japhet Tanganga – 6/10
The youngster linked up play well with others around him but was not tested too many times defensively in the first half. He got subbed in the 66th minute when Pochettino brought on Son in search of a winning goal.
RWB: Kyle Walker-Peters – 6/10
The English rising star was a decent outlet for Spurs down the right flank and managed to deliver a lot of crosses into the opposition penalty box. However, he failed to deliver the final ball to open up the Colchester defence.
CM: Oliver Skipp – 6/10
Skipp looked active in midfield and did his best to support the Tottenham frontline. He got replaced by Lamela for the final quarter of the contest.
CM: Victor Wanyama – 5.5/10
The Kenyan midfielder started the game a bit slow but put in a better performance in the second half.
LWB: Ben Davies – 5/10
The Spurs left-back struggled to make an impact in the Colchester half which will disappoint him.
RAM: Lucas Moura – 6/10
The Brazilian winger’s pace caused a lot of problems for the home side. However, he lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
LAM: Dele Alli – 5.5/10
The English playmaker worked his socks off during the game but didn’t look like he had a goal in him.
ST: Troy Parrott – 6.5/10
The teenage forward looked impressive during his time on the pitch. He was arguably Pochettino’s best hope for a goal at the JobServe Community Stadium earlier tonight.
Substitutes:
ST: Heung-min Son – 6/10
The South Korea international looked energetic after coming on to the field and tested the Colchester defenders a couple of times in the second half. He also stepped up to score his penalty in the shoot-out.
CAM: Erik Lamela – 6/10
The Argentine managed to work Dean Gerken with his attempt in the final quarter of the encounter.
CM: Christian Eriksen – 4/10
The Dane failed to influence the game after coming off the bench and missed his penalty which resulted in Spurs getting knocked out of the EFL Cup.
