As reported by Football.London, SD Huesca star Kelechi Nwakali has confirmed that there is a buy-back clause inserted in his contract that will let Arsenal sign him back for a cut-price. The youngster also admitted that Arsenal is his dream club and that he would love to return to Emirates in the future.
“One thing is sure – it’s not over yet for me at Arsenal because there’s a buy-back option in my contract as well. At the end of the contract, it will be whether I’m going back to Arsenal or moving on from there”, said the Nigerian starlet speaking to Score Nigeria.
Another Nigerian wunderkind who never really made it to the big stage
Nwakali, much like Leicester City star and compatriot, Kelechi Iheanacho, was regarded as the next big thing in Nigerian football during the early days of his footballing career. The youngster was initially a product of the Diamond Academy before he moved to Arsenal in 2016, for a fee of €3.5 million.
However, things haven’t turned out the way Nwakali would have wanted. The attacking midfielder endured four different loan spells during his three-year stay at the Emirates, notably moving to MVV Maastricht twice.
He wasn’t exactly extraordinary during his loan spells, which made it difficult for him to get any recognition from the Arsenal academy that has already produced a lot of exciting young talents in Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock among many others.
Nwakali most recently played for the FC Porto B team last season, where he failed to get involved in a single goal in 16 matches. In the end, he moved to SD Huesca, signing a three-year contract with the Spanish second division outfit.
Can Nwakali make a mark at SD Huesca?
Huesca have done a lot of business in the recently concluded European transfer window, notably bringing in Cristo on loan as well as former Leicester City star Shinji Okazaki. Borussia Dortmund starlet Sergio Gomez also joined in a season-long loan deal.
And unsurprisingly, the Spaniard will be Nwakali’s number one competitor in his bid to get regular gametime at Huesca this season. Not only Gomes, but the Spanish outfit also boast the services of the experienced Juan Carlos and Eugeni Valderrama, further reducing Nwakali’s chances of making an impact at Huesca.
The 21-year-old didn’t even make the bench in any of four games for the club this season, and it’s very unlikely he will be able to make his breakthrough in Spain anytime soon.
