Tottenham Hotspur have completed a lot of smart deals in the transfer market this summer. The acquisitions of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso brought more steel to the midfield while Ryan Sessegnon’s versatility will be useful in squad rotation.
However, lack of depth in the attacking department remains one of the club’s main issues, especially with Christian Eriksen facing an uncertain future at the club. Therefore, it would perhaps be wiser for Spurs to sign a new attacker in January. And in this article, we will discuss why they should make a move for Mario Gotze.
A replacement for Eriksen
Gotze has spent most of his footballing career playing as a central attacking midfielder. He is good at fabricating scoring opportunities for his team, which could be useful should Eriksen leave north London this summer. Much like the Dane, the Borussia Dortmund star can also operate in deeper midfield positions.
He can augment the midfield with his passing while he is an excellent ball-carrier as well. Gotze’s quick-feet allows him to nestle through tight spaces, thus easing Tottenham’s transition play. This is something Eriksen was quite good at. And Gotze, in that regard, should be an excellent replacement, even though Spurs already have Dele Alli and Lo Celso.
Tactical versatility
What makes Gotze such an appealing target for Tottenham Hotspur is his versatility. Aside from his preferred number ten role, the Dortmund star can be deployed as a false nine as well as a central midfielder. He can play in a wide position as well.
That means Gotze can be considered as a potential backup for Harry Kane. In fact, the German international has been used as a central striker in Dortmund for the past couple of years, and he has excelled in that role, notably scoring seven goals last season.
Experience and commitment
What makes the likes of Ndombele and Lo Celso such risky signings for Tottenham is their lack of experience at the highest level of football. Gotze, however, is a proven attacker, who boasts a significant amount of experience not only in club football but also in the international stage.
The 27-year-old has already made over 200 appearances in the Bundesliga, winning the German league title five times. Also, he has won 63 caps for the German national team, notably scoring the winner in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final against Argentina.
