Rangers have pretty much made a faultless start to their new campaign but face two massive games which could make or break their season. It’s still early days, but the Gers have things in their own hands as they will host Legia Warsaw at Ibrox after a 0-0 draw away from home.
Allan McGregor was the standout player for the Scottish side in the last tie as he made some big saves to keep the clean sheet. The Scottish goalkeeper recently retired from international duty, but he is still going strong at 37. McGregor was offered a two-year contract when he was signed so his deal would expire at the end of next season.
Gerrard talks about McGregor’s future
However, Gerrard gave a clear indication (The Scottish Sun) that he could look to keep him beyond his contract, but the final decision could rest on McGregor. The manager recently said, ”He’s the one the goes out there and does the work. He’s the one who can tell you how his body is feeling and what shape he’s in (when asked about his longevity).”
”On the eye, looking at him on a daily basis, he looks in good shape and in good form. He’s happy, and if that continues, then we would want him around for longer than his current contract suggests. But there also might be something in the contract that if he plays a certain amount of games, then something might kick in anyway…”
Gerrard also went on to reveal that there might be some appearance-based clause in the former Hull City goalkeeper’s deal.
What now for Rangers?
It’s good to have healthy competition for places and Rangers have two terrific goalkeepers in the form of McGregor and Wes Foderingham. McGregor has looked undroppable, and he has played a massive part in Rangers’ recent resurgence. There is no doubt that the club should get him on a new deal and it would be no surprise if he goes on to extend his contract.
However, that might mean that Foderingham could demand a move away from the club. He is too good a goalkeeper to be a no. 2, and there will be plenty of teams around where he could become the first choice. So Gerrard will have a tough dilemma as to whether to keep the more young and long term option at the club or continue with McGregor for another year or two.
Foderingham already attracted some transfer interest, and we think that he could very likely be shipped away in the future. However, it remains to be seen who will prevail in the long term at the club.
