According to a recent report by Belgian news outlet HLN (translated by the Daily Mail), Club Brugge are plotting a move to secure the signature of Tottenham Hotspur outcast Victor Wanyama. The same source has mentioned that the Belgian outfit has identified the Kenyan midfield ace as a primary target but might struggle to match his £54,000-per-week wages.
Wanyama’s Struggles At North London In Recent Times
The 28-year-old was not included in Mauricio Pochettino’s match-day squad that travelled to the Etihad Stadium to face off against Manchester City last weekend. Spurs managed to come away with a point after securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw. The message seems to be clear from Pochettino that the Kenya international is not in his first-team plans for the 2019-20 campaign. Therefore, a change of scenery could be an ideal move for Wanyama as he looks to earn more game time and reignite his career in European football.
However, the North London outfit will be under no pressure to sell him as he still has two years remaining on his current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Since making a switch from Southampton in the summer transfer period of 2016, Wanyama has featured in 93 matches for Spurs so far, registering seven goals while providing one assist on all fronts.
The Nairobi born prospect has also secured a lot of experience in international football after making 52 appearances for Kenya while scoring seven goals in the process. He is currently the skipper of the Kenyan national team that managed to earn one victory in the group stages of the African Cup of Nations this summer.
What Are The Ex-Celtic Midfielder’s Strengths?
Wanyama can be a commanding presence at the centre of the park due to his incredible strength and his ability to win a lot of 50-50 aerial duels. He can also make some vital interceptions for his side and is always willing to go that extra mile for his team. The Kenyan talent is versatile enough to not only operate as a holding midfielder but also a centre-back if required.
However, random injuries have plagued Wanyama in recent times, which has hampered his long-term growth as a midfielder. Thus, a move to Club Brugge makes sense as he would be able to get a platform to showcase his true worth once again in European football.
Should Spurs Part Ways With Wanyama?
If Pochettino is not even willing to use him as a squad player, then he should strongly consider letting Wanyama leave before the European transfer market shuts down on September 2nd. However, if Spurs are planning to use the Kenyan midfield enforcer more often this season, then they should retain his services for the time being. He can still be a useful asset for the North London giants when the fixtures come thick and fast during the winter months in the Premier League.
