In a recent interview ahead of Everton’s league encounter versus Watford tomorrow (via Liverpool Echo), Marco Silva confirmed that Fabian Delph won’t be available to play for his new employers this weekend. The Toffees boss has also mentioned that Andre Gomes is a major doubt for the game and will be in a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s Premier League clash at Goodison Park (via Liverpool Echo).
With Morgan Schneiderlin suspended for the match against the Hornets after picking up a red card last weekend, Silva will have a selection headache in his hands as he doesn’t have too much depth in midfield. Tom Davies and Jean-Philippe Gbamin will likely get the nod to start against Javi Gracia’s team. However, there is no denying that losing Delph for this game will be a bitter pill to swallow for Silva as his team tries to earn maximum points in front of the loyal Everton supporters at Merseyside.
Delph’s Career In England At A Glance
Delph can be a useful piece at the centre of the park due to his vast experience in the English top-flight. The 29-year-old made a name for himself when he was playing for Aston Villa. His incredible contributions for the Villans earned him a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2015.
However, he struggled to secure regular game time under Pep Guardiola’s stewardship and decided to join the Toffees in search of regular first-team opportunities earlier this summer.
The ex-Leeds United midfield ace has made a total of 169 appearances, scoring seven goals while grabbing ten assists during his Premier League career. Even though he is not a consistent goal-scorer or assist-maker, Delph can still offer a lot on the pitch.
The Everton new boy is primarily a central midfielder, but he can also operate in both full-back positions or on either wing if required. His outstanding versatility makes him a worthy asset in Silva’s squad. Delph is also a tireless worker and doesn’t give away possession too cheaply in midfield. However, he doesn’t add too much in terms of quality and productivity going forward.
Delph’s Unavailability Vs Watford: Big Blow For Silva?
It is undeniably a massive blow for the Merseyside club to lose Delph’s services for the next game, especially when so many of the Everton midfielders are already ruled out or doubtful for selection heading into this weekend.
