Rangers travelled to the Polish Army Stadium to take on Legia Warsaw in the first leg of the Europa League playoffs. The tie ended in a 0-0 draw and Warsaw have now managed to keep a clean sheet in all of their European home games so far this season.
The Polish fans created a boisterous atmosphere, but Rangers showed composure when they were in possession. The game was evenly matched for most parts in the first half. The best chances fell to the home side, but McGregor made two smart saves in goal in the first 45. Ojo had one decent opportunity for the Gers, but he headed the ball wide.
The home team was clearly the better side in the second half as Rangers were on the ropes and McGregor had to rescue his side. Gerrard would be happy with a 0-0 draw, and he will fancy his chances of getting a result at Ibrox next.
Here is how the Gers fared on the night.
Allan McGregor 9
Made some crucial saves in both the halves. The most important thing was that he didn’t parry the ball in a dangerous area as Warsaw players were lurking around the corner. A big clean sheet for the Scotsman.
Nikola Katic 7
Looked solid and won quite a few duels at the back. Made one crucial block in the first half. Had Rangers’ best chance in the second half through a set-piece which he headed over.
Connor Goldson 6.5
Made a big mistake in the first half but the home team failed to capitalise as Katic was able to close the opposition down. Looked strong for most parts during the duels with the opponent but was caught out of position on one or two occasions.
Jon Flanagan 7.5
Defensively looked solid but could have been better on the ball. Made one crucial last-ditch block in the box to keep the game level in the second half. Typical Flanagan as he was no-nonsense with his defending.
James Tavernier 8
Provided some dangerous crosses down the right side. Always looked to bomb forward. Defensively too, he had a good game as the captain managed to win quite a few duels.
Ryan Jack 7.5
Was everywhere on the pitch. Carried the ball well, lunged into some tackles and picked out some neat passes. An assured display once again.
Steven Davis 7.5
Hardly gave away the ball when he was in possession. Moved the ball well and played a big part whenever Rangers had a spell of possession. Just brings a lot of composure in the middle.
Joe Aribo 7
Wasn’t able to get on the ball in dangerous areas. Had one good chance to shoot at goal but Aribo’s attempt was a tame one. Played well when in possession.
Scott Arfield 6.5
Wasn’t at his best and had to do a lot of tracking back and defensive work.
Sheyi Ojo 6
Was sometimes too soft as he was shrugged from the ball more than once. The best chance for Rangers fell to him, but he headed wide. An average game for the Liverpool loanee.
Alfredo Morelos 6
Had to feed off scraps for the most of the game. Dropped in deep to get involved but wasn’t able to get on the ball in areas where he would have liked.
