In the post-match interview following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers last night (via talkSPORT), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided an update on Alexis Sanchez’s future and said,
“Well, there’s still a couple of weeks left of the transfer window, and there is a chance. Some clubs have shown interest in Alexis, so we’ll see what happens.
“I can’t update you more than that.”
Sanchez’s Nightmare Spell At Old Trafford
Since making a switch to the Theatre of Dreams in the January transfer period of 2018, the Chile international has been ravaged by injuries. Sanchez has started in just 13 matches for the Red Devils in the previous campaign which goes to show how injury-prone he has been over the past season. He appeared in a total of 27 matches for the Mancunian team, finding the back of the net twice while providing four assists across all competitions so far.
However, the South American sensation has not featured for the full 90 minutes since the opening match of the last term versus Leicester City. Now that other foreign clubs are showing interest in recruiting Sanchez, Solskjaer should consider letting him leave so that he can clear his wage-bill at Old Trafford.
Sanchez is currently on £400,000-a-week wages which seems to be a significant stumbling block for other clubs when it comes to signing the player. However, the Mancunian outfit are in dire need of cashing in on him so that they can clear their wage bill and use the money generated from Sanchez’s sale to bring in other quality players in January and beyond.
Should Solskjaer Cut Sanchez Loose?
At 30, the Chile international has his best days behind him. He is way too injury-prone these days and looks like a shadow of his former self when he lines up on the pitch to play for Man United. It doesn’t seem like Sanchez has what it takes to turn his career around at Old Trafford. Father time has caught up to him, so he has struggled to cope with the physical toll of Premier League football every week.
Therefore, Solskjaer will be better off finding a buyer for Sanchez before the European transfer market shuts down on September 2nd. The former Arsenal winger can also benefit from a move away from England as he will be able to concentrate on finishing his career strong in a less competitive league.
