Real Madrid have been dealt with a massive injury blow as the marquee signing Eden Hazard has suffered a hamstring problem in training. Goal believes that the Belgian international could be ruled out on the sidelines for about three weeks, possibly even four.
This will no doubt be a considerable setback for Zinedine Zidane. But, what it could mean for the other attackers in the team?
A second chance for Marco Asensio?
Marco Asensio didn’t enjoy the best of seasons during the 2018/19 campaign. The Spanish international scored just one goal in 30 matches and was involved in only under 1,800 minutes of league football. And following the arrivals of Hazard and Rodrygo, it became clear that the winger will struggle with a lack of gametime in the upcoming season.
However, Hazard’s hamstring injury could pave the way for Asensio to once again become the club’s main left-winger, with Vinicius Junior featuring on the opposite flank. A positive start to the season for the ex-Mallorca prodigy could easily make him an integral part of Los Blancos attack once again.
The 23-year-old will need to improve his productivity. But under the leadership Zidane, who played an influential role behind his initial rise to prominence, we expect the Spaniard to once again return to his old groove this season.
The case of James Rodriguez
It was reported this midweek that Zidane has changed his stance of James Rodriguez. The Colombian, who was on the verge of leaving the Bernabeu, is now being identified as a valuable part of the Real Madrid attack. And the recent injury of Hazard will only strengthen Rodriguez’s importance at the club.
James can add the creative essence in the final third, thanks to his ability to thread useful passes in between the defence, which is coupled with his brilliant vision. And with Hazard gone for almost a month, the 28-year-old will finally have the opportunity to make an impact this season.
However, the ex-Bayern Munich ace will likely have to compete with Isco to be accommodated into the starting lineup.
Time for the younger guns to shine?
The creative trifecta of Isco, Asensio and Rodriguez will no doubt play a key role for the club, especially in the coming weeks. But, Hazard’s injury may also enable the young offensive duo of Vinicius Junior and new signing Rodrygo to shine.
Vinicius, in particular, made quite an impact last season, despite his limited opportunities and injuries. He is already regarded as one of the most talented young footballers across the globe. And if the Brazilian can remain fit while Hazard is injured, he will undoubtedly be given a glorious opportunity to make an early impact that could make him an ever-present figure in the Real Madrid attack.
Rodrygo, too, has shown a lot of promise in the Brazilian league. But unlike Vinicius, he is yet to showcase his talents in Europe.
