Rangers seem to be in a better position in the transfer market than their rivals Celtic as Gerrard has completed most of his transfer dealings early. However, recently both the Glaswegian giants received a blow from Turkish club Trabzonspor as they are said to be in a pole position (Fanatik) to sign former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.
Reports mention that there was an interest from Gerrard. But now it is unlikely that Rangers will get their man as Trabzonspor are believed to be offering a deal worth €2m/year for the two-time Champions League-winning striker. Thus, Rangers have been financially outmuscled by their Turkish counterparts in this deal.
Does Rangers need a striker?
A lot is likely to depend on Alfredo Morelos’ future as the Colombian has attracted interest from various quarters. Prospective clubs have made no official bid, but things could change quickly in the transfer market. Rangers though should want to add one more attacking option even if Morelos stays put at Ibrox. Kyle Lafferty has left the club with mutual consent even though he had one more year left on his contract.
That leaves Rangers with two genuine strikers in the roster. With league games, domestic cup competitions and European football to compete in, the club should ideally look to add one more option, especially given Morelos’ disciplinary record.
Would Sturridge have been a good signing?
The English striker’s career is on a downward trajectory now, but he still has those goal-scoring instincts. Injuries have been a big issue for him in the last 3-4 years, but he seemingly remained fit for most parts of the previous season. The forward made 27 appearances in all competitions which were mostly off the bench and scored four goals in the last campaign. There were some indications that he has left his injury woes behind him.
On a free transfer, he would have been worth considering. His experience and ability would have made him a decent signing. But his signing would have come with significant risks, and that couldn’t have been ignored. Moreover, his wages were always going to be a problem for Rangers to afford. So missing out on him shouldn’t be too much of a blow for Gerrard.
What should Gerrard do?
The club should still look to sign a forward and a young and hungry player could be the right choice for the club. Moreover, Gerrard should look at a targetman who would provide something different than Morelos and Defoe.
