Rangers’ season has already begun in Europe as they have defeated FC Progrès Niederkorn in the Europa League second qualifying round contest. They are now set to clash heads with Danish outfit FC Midtjylland but, at the same time, are still engaged in the transfer activity despite roping in an array of summer signings.
The growing uncertainty over the return of Ryan Kent has led the Gers to strengthen their wide attack by getting deals done for Sheyi Ojo, Jake Hastie, Greg Stewart and Jordan Jones. Jamie Murphy is expected to return to action having missed out the majority of the previous term. However, the exit of Daniel Candeias and the out-of-favour Eros Grezda has somewhat balanced the books in terms of squad strength.
Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, is expecting yet another egress soon. Teenager Glenn Middleton is set for a loan switch to Dutch outfit NAC Breda, and the gaffer has revealed the same in a recent interview (as quoted by the Daily Record).
“Glenn Middleton is very close to going on loan in Holland.
“Fair play to him going for such a challenge. That will be good for his development, playing for a team challenging in front of passionate fans.”
Does He Have A Future In Glasgow?
The promising Scotsman joined the Light Blues from Norwich City after making significant strides through the Canaries’ youth ranks. He exhibited glimpses of his excellence last season having fired in 5 goals and assisting 4 more in 27 appearances across all competitions. But his gametime was limited later in the campaign, and therefore, Middleton is seeking a fresh challenge temporarily to gain more experience before staking a claim in Gerrard’s long-term plannings.
The youngster was rumoured to be in Doncaster’s radar but is set to ply his trade in Holland to join the Eerste Divisie outfit who got relegated from Eredivisie upon completion of the last season. Middleton would be handed a key role in their battle to clinch an immediate top-flight return, and a stellar display there in Breda would cement his future at Ibrox for the forthcoming years.
Right Call From Gerrard?
The Rangers chief, however, should have kept hold of the Scotland U21 international for the time being to have the best possible combination upfront. Sheyi Ojo, on loan from Liverpool, has been exquisite so far and is expected to operate from the right flank in place of Candeias. But they are yet to figure out the best possible option to succeed Kent down the left. Middleton, who had moments of mastery while being deployed in a similar role, could have been a lethal weapon in their battle for conquering the Premiership.
