In a recent interview, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied rumours of him walking away from North London after this weekend’s derby against Arsenal (via talkSPORT). The Argentine head coach termed the speculation as “stupid” and said (via talkSPORT), “That stupidity can happen through some rumour sending to social media that creates a big, big problem that doesn’t exist.
“I am not going to walk away after the north London derby. I will be here on Monday and Tuesday.”
Some bookmakers have even suspended betting on Pochettino becoming the next Premier League manager to leave his role which added fuel to all the speculation (via talkSPORT). The South American head coach has taken Spurs to new heights over the past few years since joining the North London outfit in the summer of 2014.
Pochettino’s Brilliant Spell As The Spurs Boss
Tottenham marched to their first-ever UEFA Champions League final last season, but they were narrowly edged out by Liverpool at Madrid earlier this summer. Pochettino has made progress at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with each season and so a lot will be expected of his side in the 2019-20 campaign as well.
The 47-year-old has taken charge of 279 matches for Spurs thus far, winning 156, drawing 55 and losing 68 of those games with a healthy PPG (Points Per Game) average of 1.87 (stats via transfermarkt).
What Makes Pochettino Such A High-Profile Manager?
There is no denying that Pochettino is one of the best and most highly sought after managers in European football. He has built a reputation for building a profitable and robust project at Spurs, even with limited resources. Thus, only the sky is the limit for the Argentine boss if he can get more backing in terms of investment in the transfer market.
However, one asterisk beside Pochettino’s name has always been his inability to deliver trophies for the North London giants so far. The Spurs boss has to find a way to end the trophy drought and win some silverware with his team in the coming years.
Why The Champions League Finalists Cannot Afford To Let Pochettino Leave
It would have been shocking to witness Pochettino part ways with Spurs after he was backed financially by the club during the recent summer transfer window. Tottenham cannot afford to lose a manager of the Argentine’s calibre as he has been the linchpin behind the club’s transformation from Premier League pretenders to UEFA Champions League contenders.
