Reports from the Scottish Sun recently linked Celtic with Rosenborg’s left-back Birger Meling. He was being considered as a ‘serious option’ for the left-back position. Now former Celtic player Chris Sutton gave an update that the Hoops are close to sealing the deal.
Sutton on-air with BT Sport revealed (via Daily Record), ”I think Celtic are going to make a signing. Just going to give you a bit of news, I think Celtic are going to sign the Rosenborg left-back. Meling. We’re nearly there.”
Why is a left-back needed?
The Bhoys are currently reeling after being thrown out of the Champions League qualifiers for the second season in a row. We can expect some signings to be made in the last few weeks of the transfer window and a left-back seems to be high on the list.
The performance of Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo hasn’t instilled much confidence in the team and fans as he has looked defensively vulnerable. With no other outright left-back option, it was always expected that the Bhoys would go after another signing this summer.
Can Meling be a top option for Lennon?
Meling has scored against Celtic once as the Bhoys have squared up against Rosenborg a couple of time in the recent past. The defender is a ten times Norwegian international and reports earlier claimed that he is open to a move away this summer. The 24-year-old’s contract will expire in December next year.
The Norwegian fullback made 30 appearances in all competitions last season for Rosenborg and contributed with two goals and three assists. The fullback’s biggest asset is his pace and energy, and he can deliver some delicious crosses from the left.
He is known for his link-up play and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Meling has even filled in as a left winger when required as he is an attack-minded fullback. Defensively too, the 24 year is reliable, and he can hold his own at the back. There is no doubt that 24-year-old has the right profile which will suit Celtic’s game.
Meling impressed while playing against Celtic and he will probably become the first choice option over Bolingoli. Filling in Tierney’s shoes will be a big task, and the fans should remain a bit patient with the new signings as they will need some time to settle in at the club. Meling has the raw ingredients to be successful for a club of Celtic’s stature.
