Rangers travelled to MCH Arena to take on Danish heavyweights Midtjylland in the third round of the Europa League qualifiers, and the Glaswegian giants produced one of their best European performance in recent history as they secured a 4-2 win on the night.
The first half was evenly matched for the most parts, and both teams managed to create some half chances. Midtjylland especially looked threatening from their long throw-ins and corner kicks, and the Gers had some nervy moments as they failed to clear their line. Morelos gave the Scottish side the lead late in the half as James Tavernier delivered a fantastic cross for the Colombian striker who headed home.
The second half started for Rangers well as Aribo scored on the counter after some good work by Jones. The away side went into dreamland when Katic provided a striker’s finish after Morelos set him up smartly. However, Rangers were pegged back as Midtjylland managed two back to back goals to bring the score to 3-2. However, the Gers once again increased their lead as Morelos set up Arfield for the fourth goal. The game got feisty in the end, but the Scottish team kept their head to see out the lead.
Allan McGregor 7
Couldn’t have done much to prevent the goals. Made some decent saves and did his job well.
Nikola Katic 8
Often tried to press high and win the ball back quickly. Did his job well for the most parts defensively. Finished brilliantly for Rangers’ third.
Connor Goldson 6.5
Had a good game overall, but was sloppy on occasions and might have to take some blame for the goal which Rangers conceded.
Jon Flanagan 7
The former Liverpool man was brought in for his defensive stability, and that is what he provided. Nothing too flashy while going forward, but did his job at the back.
James Tavernier 8
Made some smart forward runs. Delivered a pinpoint cross for the opener. Defensively too, the captain worked hard and made a few impressive blocks and interceptions.
Ryan Jack 7
Played the usual role of midfield disruptor and did his job well. Worked hard like always and won a lot of 50-50 duels. Got himself into a bit of a fight in the end.
Glen Kamara 6
Had a slightly quiet game and was guilty of giving the ball away in a dangerous situation. Improved as the game went on.
Joe Aribo 7.5
What a signing he has been. Made some brilliant runs and finished well for the goal on the counter. Looked calm and composed in possession.
Scott Arfield 7.5
Played the attacking midfield role well as he got himself into some good positions. Worked his socks off and linked up play smartly. Took the fourth goal well as he composed himself before slotting the ball in the net.
Jordan Jones 8
Made one terrific run where he carried the ball from his own half but failed to find the final ball. Always willing to take on his man and kept the home side on edge with his direct style of play and powerful running. Wasn’t part of the last few games and made a statement today with a good performance.
Alfredo Morelos 8
Was his usual feisty self as he was trying to make runs between the channels. Scored with a smart header after Tavernier found him brilliantly. Assisted two goals in the second half as he kept his head to find his team-mate. Typical Morelos performance.
