Ole will be at the wheel for his first full season at Manchester United, and this will be after a transfer window where they did make some big spendings. However, the general consensus is still that the club hasn’t done enough to stop the slide which they have been going through in the past few years. Moreover, the last-minute sale of Romelu Lukaku should be a big blow for the club as that leaves United very short on genuine centre forward options.
It was clear that the club wanted to sign some more attacking talents, but for some reason or the other, they couldn’t get the deals over the line. Paul Pogba dropped a bomb just before the transfer window as he claimed that he wanted a new challenge. Clubs outside of England can still sign him, but it is unlikely that United will sanction a deal as they won’t be able to bring in his replacement.
United brought in 3 significant players this summer in the form of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James. Here is what their strongest lineup could look like.
Formation (4-2-3-1)
This is the system which United have played more often than not since Ole took over and we don’t think it’s going to change much from that.
Defence
David De Gea had an underwhelming campaign last season, and he would want to showcase his supremacy again in goal after being United’s stand out player for years. The defence is the area where the club is going to change the most as Harry Maguire will come in the centre back position. The price tag is going to make a lot of noise, and every little error will be scrutinised heavily. It’s up to the player now to prove his worth.
Victor Lindelof is going to be his partner in defence. Luke Shaw should occupy the left-back spot. New signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka will surely start from the right.
Midfield
Scott McTominay has impressed in whatever little chances he has got, and we think that he can have a big season in midfield. Nemanja Matic should partner him in the double pivot in midfield. Paul Pogba would be the other midfielder, but it is yet not clear what United will get from him on a particular day. He will start in the attacking midfield role.
New signing Daniel James should start over Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata down the right. Anthony Martial will have to step up big time this season, and he should be on the left flank.
Attack
A lot will rest on Marcus Rashford’s shoulders this season, and he is expected to lead the line. Young Mason Greenwood is probably being seen as a backup option.
