According to Voetbal, as cited by TZ, Bayern Munich are interested in the services of Tahith Chong. The Manchester United winger has been identified as potential like for like replacement for Arjen Robben, who retired from professional football after the end of last season.
Chong is one of the most exciting young players for Manchester United
A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Chong initially moved to Manchester United in 2016. He has since enjoyed a rapid rise, thanks to his blistering performances in the English youth leagues. The youngster notably scored three goals and provided seven assists in 14 games in the Premier League 2 during the 2016/17 campaign.
Last season, in particular, the Dutchman enjoyed the most prolific season in his youth career in England, scoring six goals in 17 games. It even led to him making his Premier League debut in March as he featured at the last minute against Southampton. He was also involved in 36 minutes in the draw with Huddersfield Town in May.
What does Chong bring to the table?
A right-winger by trade, Chong is primarily known for his pace and dynamism on the flanks. Much like Robben, he likes to cut inside from wider position and loves to take on defenders. Indeed, the 19-year-old is blessed with quick-feet that allows him to complete a lot of dribbles in the final third. It also helps him nestle through tight spaces.
Aside from his dribbling prowess and pace, Chong is a versatile attacker as well. He can operate on both wings as well as an attacking midfielder, where his technical quality allows him to link-up with teammates and create scoring opportunities in the final third.
Is Chong a first-team material for Manchester United?
Chong has very little experience in professional football. But, that won’t deter Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer from giving him a chance to impress for the first-team this season, especially with Alexis Sanchez linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer.
Besides, the Red Devils lack depth in the wide-attacking department, with Anthony Martial being used in a more central role this season. That leaves Solskjaer with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James as his only viable options. Hence, Chong may turn out to be an invaluable option for the Norwegian during the latter parts of the campaign, even though he is yet to be promoted to the senior side.
Manchester United, therefore, should definitely keep hold of their prized asset, although it will be interesting to see if Bayern Munich do make a move for him this summer.
