According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Alexis Sanchez has reached an agreement with Inter Milan regarding a potential transfer out of Old Trafford. The Chilean international has fallen out of favour, and a move to Serie A could help him revive his career. However, Inter Milan will have to agree a deal with Manchester United to complete the transfer.
Sanchez’s struggles at United
Sanchez initially joined Manchester United at the start of last year, for a fee of €34 million. But, the ex-Arsenal star suffered a poor run of form throughout the rest of the 2017/18 campaign, scoring only two goals in 12 matches. He did show glimpses of his brilliance, at times, but, his lack of consistency ultimately made him a flop in his first season at United.
The Chilean struggled with a knee and hamstring injury that kept him out for the chunk of the 2018/19 campaign. In fact, he only mustered 877 minutes of league football, scoring one goal and providing three assists. And following the arrival of Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer, the 30-year-old has fallen behind Anthony Martial down the pecking order in the United attack.
What could United lose if they offload Sanchez?
Sanchez is currently the only experienced attacker for Manchester United alongside Juan Mata. The ex-Barcelona star has vast experience at the highest level of football and is also among the most successful players in the current United setup. Besides, the Chilean has already proven himself in the Premier League, scoring 80 goals during his time at Arsenal.
Sanchez can provide the tenacity as well as the dynamism in the attack that could become useful for any Premier League side. Also, he is a threat from long-range and is a lethal goalscorer, which has been reflected in his statistics for Arsenal. However, the 30-year-old is an injury-prone, having suffered several spells on the sidelines throughout his professional career.
Should Manchester United offload Sanchez?
Solskjaer’s apparent plan to revolve his team around young players has been indicated by Manchester United’s transfer market activity this summer. Sanchez’s potential departure, in that regard, could help the Red Devils fund a move for someone, who is more fitted to their new philosophy.
Besides, the Chilean international has evidently struggled to replicate his performances at Old Trafford. And at the age of 30, he cannot be considered as a long-term option either. Therefore, getting rid of Sanchez might be the best option for Manchester United as they look to continue their squad overhaul.
