In a recent interview ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Southampton in the Premier League tomorrow (via Manchester Evening News), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an update on the future of Marcos Rojo and said, “Marcos is staying definitely. We’re a squad now that is less in numbers but still big enough and strong enough to have coverage in all positions.”
The Red Devils have been planning to clear out some of the deadwood from their backline after the arrival of Harry Maguire from Leicester City earlier this summer. It seems like both Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian are set to move away from Old Trafford before the European transfer window shuts down on September 2nd.
However, the Mancunian outfit has decided to keep Rojo so that he can play as a back-up to Victor Lindelof and Maguire in Solskjaer’s squad. Man United are also planning to use Axel Tuanzebe more often this season. He has been named on the bench for all three of their league matches this term.
Rojo’s Injury-Ridden Career In English Football
Rojo was a sporadic feature for the Red Devils in the 2018-19 campaign when he made just six appearances on all fronts. Injuries have hampered his career at Old Trafford thus far so the jury is still out on whether he can overcome his health concerns in the coming years.
What Does The Argentine Centre-Half Offer On The Field?
Rojo has a wealth of experience and knows what it takes to win trophies at the highest level. He is also a decent defender inside his own half and can make some important interceptions for his side when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.
The Argentine defensive ace is always comfortable on the ball and can pick a pass out from the back. However, his recent injury problems have taken a lot out of his game, and he looks like a shadow of his former self these days.
Did Solskjaer Make The Right Decision By Retaining Rojo’s Services Beyond This Summer?
Hence, Man United should have parted ways with Rojo this summer as he is clearly past his prime and is not a solid presence in defence anymore. Solskjaer might end up regretting his decision to retain the Argentine’s services beyond this summer. The Red Devils could have saved up some money on their wage bill if they managed to find a new buyer for Rojo this summer.
However, it seems like the Mancunian outfit are prepared to give him another chance to reignite his career at the Theatre of Dreams this season.
