According to Independent, Manchester United are ready to make one last-ditch effort to sign Christian Eriksen. The Tottenham Hotspur star has been linked with a move away from North London throughout this summer. As a result, the Lilywhites entered the chase for another Man United target Bruno Fernandes this week. But, soon after reportedly completing a big-money move for Harry Maguire, the Red Devils, it seems, are ready to break the bank once again for Eriksen.
Paul Pogba’s departure will be key
Any deal for Eriksen will mainly depend on Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford. The Frenchman is determined to leave the club, with Real Madrid still interested in attaining his services. United have already slapped an expensive price-tag for the midfielder worth over £150 million – a fee that should help them fund move for Eriksen. But, will the Dane be a better option than Pogba?
Eriksen will offer a lot more creativity
Eriksen is an out and out playmaker. He is, in fact, is one of the world’s best attacking midfielders. Hence, it’s probably needless to say that the 27-year-old is capable of enhancing the quality of Manchester United’s creative department.
His ability to conjure up scoring opportunities with his neat passing and brilliantly weighed through balls in behind the defence should tune in well with the speedy attackers like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James. The former Ajax star is also quite proficient in set-pieces – meaning he could turn out to be United’s creator-in-chief.
The Dane is less expensive
While Eriksen may not be able to add much commercial value to the club, he is much cheaper when compared to Pogba. Besides, his current contract at Tottenham Hotspur expires at the end of the upcoming season, meaning he will be available on a cut-price this summer.
Moreover, Eriksen will demand considerably lower wages than Pogba, making him a financially suitable target for the Red Devils. Not to mention that the Premier League giants have already made a few big-money moves in the transfer market this summer.
Relation with Spurs could create a conflict
Despite United’s keen interest in the services of Eriksen this summer, it’s unlikely Tottenham Hotspur will let their star player go directly to their league rivals Manchester United.
Therefore, Manchester United’s pursuit of Eriksen will likely fail. But, it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga takes shape in the coming days. The transfer market in England slams shut in less than a week.
