According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Manchester United midfield ace, Nemanja Matic is frustrated with the lack of game time and is willing to discuss his future with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The same source has revealed that the Serbia international is unhappy with his life at Old Trafford after losing his first-team place to Scott McTominay this season.
Nemanja Matic’s Recent Frustrations At The Theatre Of Dreams
Matic has not played a single minute of Premier League football so far in this campaign despite being an integral member of the Red Devils senior team over the past couple of years. Since his arrival from Chelsea in the summer of 2017, the Serbian talent has been a useful asset for Man United despite their recent struggles across all competitions.
The 31-year-old has put in some dogged defensive displays but has lost his way after Solskjaer’s appointment earlier this year. Matic has featured in 87 matches for the Red Devils so far, scoring three goals while grabbing three assists across all competitions. On the defensive end, he has made an average of 1.8 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game in the English top-flight last season (stats via whoscored).
Matic has also represented Serbia in 46 international matches and has registered two goals for his nation in the process. The Sabac born talent is about to embark upon the twilight years of his playing career so he needs regular first-team football to ensure that he can end his career on a high.
What Does The Serbian Midfielder Offer On The Field?
Matic is a tough-tackling holding midfielder who loves to win a lot of 50-50 duels at the centre of the park. The Serbia international is more renowned for his defensive prowess than his attacking returns. He is not afraid to do the dirty defensive work in midfield and can make some vital interceptions for his side. However, the Man United veteran is slowing down with each year so he might struggle to perform consistently at the highest level.
Should The Red Devils Part Ways With Matic This Summer?
Solskjaer might be better off cashing in on Matic this summer if he is willing to put his faith in the youth. The up-and-coming midfield talents like McTominay, Andreas Pereira and Angel Gomes will have a better chance of featuring in Solskjaer’s first-team if the veteran players like Matic are sold this summer.
Man United need to think about success in the long-run, so it makes sense for them to trust their younger players rather than a player who is way past his prime in Matic.
