According to Metro, Manchester United are eyeing a move for Fernando Llorente amid reports linking Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan. It is believed that the Red Devils are open to loaning out the Chilean to the Serie A as his hefty wages is proving to be a problem. And having failed to sign any real replacements for Romelu Lukaku, they are now keen on signing Llorente, who is currently a free agent.
A perfect backup for Rashford & Martial
With Lukaku gone, Manchester United now have to rely on Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as far as goalscoring is concerned. Martial has been the one, who has led the line for the Premier League giants this season, with Rashford operating at left-wing.
The Frenchman has already netted two goals in two matches, with Rashford also equalling that record. But, the Red Devils could be in deep trouble, should any of them get injured during this campaign. And with the club set to take part in the Europa League, they must sign a backup striker.
Llorente, in that regard, could provide excellent cover for the two attackers. The Spaniard has considerable experience in the Premier League and should be able to settle in quickly at his new club.
Tactical versatility
What makes the offensive duo of Rashford and Martial so deadly is their technical prowess. Both are capable of quickly interchanging position, which makes it difficult for opposing defenders to keep tabs on them. Besides, they can also play quick one-twos and breach the backline.
That being said, having two technically astute attackers could sometime cause difficulty, especially when breaking down deep defensive blocks. And that’s where Llorente could be useful. Much like, Lukaku, the veteran forward is known for his physical and aerial prowess.
Indeed, the ex-Spurs star has an extremely tall 1.95m frame that gives him a considerable advantage when it comes to headed duels. That means the Spaniard can be utilised as a target-man, should both Martial and Rashford fail to break the shackles of the opposing defences.
Besides, Llorente’s willingness to hurry and hassle the opposing defenders would make United much more vigilant in their first line of press. Hence, it’s probably safe to say that the 34-year-old will add another dimension to the attack – making him an ideal target for the Red Devils.
