According to the latest reports from the Sun, Manchester City have come to an agreement with Juventus over the sale of Joao Cancelo. City are offering Juventus £27m plus Danilo, and Italian heavyweights have accepted that move. Cancelo has been linked with a City move for quite some time, and now it seems like Pep Guardiola has finally got his man during the final phase of the summer transfer window.
It is said that Guardiola was keen on Cancelo as he wanted to give Kyle Walker some real competition for places. Danilo was only used as a sporadic option since he arrived, and the gulf between Walker and the Brazilian was quite visible.
Good deal from City?
City would be glad that they managed to ship away Danilo before bringing in a new right-back. Cancelo is 25 and currently in the prime of his career. Moreover, he has got some experience of playing at the highest level as he has won trophies with Juventus and has also established himself in the Portugal national team.
The amount of £27m plus Danilo seems like a good deal as Cancelo will provide stiffer competition to Walker. Maybe he can even replace him as the first choice right-back once he settles in at the club.
Kyle Walker has been slightly error-prone in the past even though he is quite effective on the offensive front. The Englishman will be 30 by the time next season ends so it is a good move for the club to bring in a younger option. Danilo never really managed to get going at the club after his signing from Real Madrid. The Brazilian started just nine games in the Premier League last season, and that showed that Guardiola didn’t have much confidence in the 28-year-old.
What can Cancelo bring to the table?
The Portuguese is a typical modern-day attack-minded fullback. He is quick, agile and always bursting with energy down the right. His ability to carry the ball from the back, pace and dribbling skills have seen him even being used as a winger before in his career. The defender can hold his own at the back as well, but he could be troubled by the physical nature of the Premier League.
Nevertheless, once he settles in at the club, he could be a top player for Guardiola. The money plus swap deal by Manchester City is a good one for the future of the club.
