Celtic are known to have an interest in Bournemouth’s winger Jordon Ibe. More fuel was added to the rumours when reports from the Express emerged that Celtic are close to agreeing on a loan deal for the winger. However, reports from the Daily Record (Live Transfer Blog; 21:12) citing Celtic sources claim that such a story is wide off the mark.
Celtic sources have reportedly rubbished those claims, and it remains to be seen now what would transpire in the next few days. The Bhoys have a lot to do in the transfer market as they are still in need of fullbacks and maybe one versatile attacker as well.
Ibe came up from Liverpool’s academy, and he was touted heavily when he broke on to the scene. However, the Englishman never really managed to push himself to the next level, and the Cherries decided to sign him up. Even at Bournemouth, the winger has fallen behind the pecking order.
But Eddie Howe’s side is currently reeling with injuries as wide players like Danjuma, David Brooks and Junior Stanislas are currently out. Therefore, we think that the manager might want to keep hold of the winger. However, once Howe has all his options available, Ibe will find it hard to get game time.
Should Celtic go after a winger?
The 23-year-old Bournemouth man is traditionally a right-winger, but he can easily slot in at left wing. Lennon has James Forrest as the standout option on the right flank, but there is a bit of concern on the opposite side. Scott Sinclair is clearly not in favour since Lennon has taken over and he has been used sporadically. Lewis Morgan has looked average at best, and Michel Johnston seems to be the only decent left-wing option.
Getting a winger might not be a necessity at the moment, but if Celtic can get in a quality option, then it would be a decent move for them.
Is Ibe worth going after?
The winger has drawn interest from the likes of Napoli, Fiorentina, Galatasaray and Espanyol so far, so it is a testament to his ability that some of the top clubs are after him. Celtic will do well to get him on loan, and he will add more directness and pace to their game.
The Englishman’s final product is questionable, but we think that he can have a significant impact at Celtic once he settles in. We saw how Ryan Kent who is an u-23 player for Liverpool, helped Rangers last season. Ibe can have a similar impact if Celtic can go on to sign him.
