Celtic have been heavily linked with Rosenborg’s Norwegian left-back Birger Meling. Chris Sutton even went on to reveal on-air that Celtic are close to signing him (Daily Record). However, contradicting reports are now emerging as reports from the Daily Record as cited by the Scottish Sun conveys that Celtic are no longer interested in Meling.
This will be surprising if it is true as Meling seemed like a promising option to us. The 24-year-old is a ten-time Norway international, and he had squared up against Celtic while representing Rosenborg. The fullback has scored against the Bhoys and looked impressive whenever he came up against the Scottish giants in the recent past.
The Hoops are in desperate need of a left-sided fullback as they lost Emilio Izaguirre and more importantly Kieran Tierney this summer. Lennon has already brought in Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo; however, the former Rapid Wien fullback has looked defensively vulnerable, and he might need some more time to settle in.
With just a few weeks remaining in the transfer window, we expect Celtic to strengthen their left-back spot as well as the right-back position.
Why will Meling be a good signing?
The 24-year-old defender made 30 appearances in all competitions last season for Rosenborg and came up with two goals and three assists. Meling’s biggest strength is his pace, energy and tenacity. The fullback can whip in some impressive crosses with his left foot, and he is a modern-day attack-minded fullback.
Meling is comfortable while carrying the ball from the back and he can link up play well with his short passes. The Rosenborg man has even played as a left-winger when required, so his versatility will also be a big plus for Lennon. On the defensive front, Meling can keep things tight as he reads the game well and is known for making some crunching tackles.
Why does Lennon need to change his stance?
Reports mention that Meling is open to a move this summer. Rosenborg recently rejected an approach from MLS outfit Los Angeles FC for their fullback. Celtic can offer Europa League (if they qualify) football to the defender so that is something which can lure him.
The 24-year-old has his contract at the club until December next year. We think that Meling has the right profile to be a success at Parkhead and Lennon should change his stance if he has decided not to pursue this reliable left-sided fullback. It remains to be seen whether this latest update is correct or not.
