In a recent interview with Sky Sports after Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Norwich City last weekend, Frank Lampard was full of praise when asked about Jorginho and said, “What I see in Jorginho is a quality of pass and I want to see him use his range.
“He played some great through-balls against Liverpool and I know he can do it. He can do what’s asked of him and he is eager to do it. I love his spirit, how he trains and how he plays. I keep going on about that but it’s infectious and it’s important.
“I watched him last year and I thought he finished the season really well but you only really know a player when you see them day in and day out. From the first day of training, he showed me instantly his quality and his attitude. I am actually fortunate to have Jorginho.”
Jorginho’s Impressive Yet Unpopular Spell At West London
The Italian midfielder enjoyed a solid debut season at Stamford Bridge under Maurizio Sarri’s tutelage but has failed to win over the support of the club’s loyal supporters. His critics have often questioned his lack of defensive awareness in midfield. He has been guilty of slowing play down at the centre of the park which has harmed his team’s overall performance on the pitch.
The 27-year-old has scored three goals in 58 appearances for the Pensioners thus far. However, he is yet to earn his first assist for the west London club, which is quite a surprise considering he is renowned for his creative attributes in midfield. He has also secured 16 international caps for Italy and has one goal for his nation to his name.
What Does The Italian Midfield Ace Add To Lampard’s Side?
Jorginho is an accurate passer of the ball and can create some decent openings for his teammates in the opposition half. He hardly throws away possession and can provide some added protection for the Chelsea backline. The former Napoli sensation is also brilliant at converting penalties with two of his three goals for the Pensioners coming from the spot. However, the Italian prospect is slow on the ball and needs time to make plays for others around him.
The Italy international can be a liability on the pitch against any high calibre opposition. At the same time, he can be an advantageous asset in breaking down teams that like to sit back and defend in numbers against Chelsea.
Lampard’s recent praise will undoubtedly give Jorginho a massive boost after his future at Stamford Bridge was becoming uncertain following the departure of Sarri earlier this year. With the Pensioners set to compete in the UEFA Champions League, the Italian’s role in the team would be more important than ever in this campaign.
