According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich are closing in on an agreement with Inter Milan over the potential transfer of Ivan Perisic. The Croatian international has been identified as the ideal alternative after the Bundesliga giants backed out on their pursuit of Leroy Sane. Romano claims that Perisic could switch to Bavaria on loan with an option to buy clause embedded in the deal.
Perisic’s signing could be a sigh of relief for Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich were seemingly desperate to sign at least one winger this summer, following the departure of Franck Ribery as well as the retirement of Arjen Robben. As a result, they only had two viable choices in the wider attacking positions in Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman.
However, the Bavarians were rebuffed in their attempts to sign Sane earlier this summer. Another top target in Callum Hudson-Odoi also looks set to stay at Chelsea. Therefore, Perisic can be considered as a last resort option for the Bundesliga champions.
But, at the same time, his addition to the club could be a sigh of relief for the club. Their shortcomings on the wider attacking department were rather evident when Thomas Muller had to start at RW versus Dortmund in the DFL Supercup.
The German international looked rusty and clueless throughout the game as Bayern slumped to a 2-0 defeat. Perisic, in that regard, will add more depth in the wide department, thus allowing Muller to feature in his preferred Ramdeuter role.
Is he the best option for Bayern?
As mentioned earlier, Perisic looks like a last resort option for Bayern Munich after failed pursuits of Sane and Hudson-Odoi. The Croatian international, at the age of 30, certainly isn’t getting any younger and thus cannot be considered as a long-term option for the Bavarians.
Sane to that end, could have been an ideal fit as he is already one of the most sought-after attackers in Europe. He is also German and would have settled in pretty quickly, especially alongside his Germany teammates in Niklas Sule, Leon Goretzka and Gnabry.
As for Hudson-Odoi, he surely has a lot of potential and given his style of play; it won’t be surprising to see him raise some eyebrows in this new season for Chelsea.
Experience and familiarity could be key
Bayern Munich could have surely settled for someone better than Perisic. But, in hindsight, the 30-year-old might be a smart piece of investment for the German giants. The Croatian already has a lot of experience in the Bundesliga, having made 112 combined appearances during his time at Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg.
Furthermore, Perisic is likely to have a good relationship with his compatriot and Bayern Munich coach Kovac. And it won’t be surprising to see him performing well under the leadership of the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt boss in the upcoming campaign.
