According to Tuttosport, as cited by Express, Barcelona and Juventus are in talks over a swap deal between Juan Miranda and Daniele Rugani. It is believed both clubs have already started negotiations, with Juve, in particular, keen to secure the services of Miranda while offloading the unwanted Rugani. But, how much does this deal make sense for Barcelona?
Is Miranda needed at Barca?
Miranda is originally a product of the Real Betis youth academy. But, he moved to La Masia at an early age and was promoted to the Barcelona senior side last year. The left-back isn’t a prominent part of the first-team, having made only four competitive appearances with the Blaugrana. But, his performances in the youth leagues has made him one of the hottest defensive talents in Europe.
However, despite the 19-year-old’s immense talents, Barcelona have put their faith on the market by roping in Junior Firpo this summer. The Dominican fullback arrived in Catalonia for €18 million and has been identified as the potential long-term replacement for the ageing Jordi Alba.
That means it’s unlikely Miranda would get the chance to make his breakthrough at Barcelona anytime soon. A move to Juventus, therefore, does make sense as he will only have to compete with Alex Sandro in Turin.
How can Rugani benefit the Barcelona defence?
Barcelona don’t really have a lot of depth in the central defensive department at the moment. Gerard Pique is nearing the end of his career, leaving Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti the only other reliable options at the heart of the backline. Although they boast the services of youngster Jean-Clair Todibo, he lacks experience at the highest level of football.
Rugani, in that regard, might not be a bad investment for the Spanish champions. The Italian can offer some much-needed depth in the defensive department. And given the fact that he already has vast experience of playing in Serie A, it’s unlikely he will struggle to adapt to Spanish football.
Besides, Umtiti hasn’t been a first-team regular for Barcelona, of late. Rugani, therefore, can compete with the Frenchman for a place in the starting lineup in the future. And at the age of 25, the ex-Empoli star has time on his side and should be a smart long-term investment for the Blaugrana.
