Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League table after securing a comprehensive 4-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
The defending champions started the game in the best way possible, scoring the opener inside the second minute through Kevin de Bruyne. They piled on more pressure on the hapless Brighton defence and doubled their lead just before half-time, thanks to Sergio Aguero. The first-half ended as Man City led 2-0.
It was more or less the same story in the second half. Aguero doubled his tally in the 55th minute, capitalising on a brilliant ball from David Silva. And finally, it was the substitute Bernardo Silva, who added more gloss to the scoreline by scoring the fourth goal in the 79th minute. Only this time, Aguero was the supplier.
Here is how Pep Guardiola’s troops fared during their emphatic win over the Seagulls this afternoon.
Ederson 7
Made an astonishing save in the first half to deny Leandro Trossard. Aside from that, the Brazilian had a quiet afternoon, with Brighton managing only two shots on target. Excellent in the build-up as always.
Kyle Walker 8
A well-rounded performance from the England international, who went forward a couple of times and made driving runs into the final third. Also kept check of Trossard on the right flank.
Nicolas Otamendi 8
A relatively quiet afternoon for Otamendi, who barely had to do anything in defence. Did well to distribute possession after the injury of Aymeric Laporte in the first-half.
Aymeric Laporte 7
Did an excellent job to keep out the Brighton attack but was unlucky to pick up an injury in the 37th minute. He was replaced by Fernandinho.
Oleksandr Zinchenko 8.5
Started the game really well, providing extensive support from the left flank. His combination play with Raheem Sterling and David Silva was genuinely eye-catching.
Rodri 8.5
A commendable performance from the Spaniard, who augmented the midfield with his flawless passing. His excellent positional sense allowed him to remain one step ahead of the opposition. The former Atletico star also made a couple of amazing tackles during the final phase of the game.
Kevin de Bruyne 9
Heavily involved in Manchester City’s attacking game, as usual. The Belgian scored the early opener, capitalising on Silva’s cross. He also registered the assist for Sergio Aguero’s 42nd-minute goal, making a nice cutback. Ultimately made way for Ilkay Gundogan during the final phase of the game.
David Silva 10
By far the most effective player on the pitch this afternoon, Silva ruled the show with his incredible combination play with his fellow teammates in the final third. His awareness, coupled with his technical prowess and mobility made it difficult for the Brighton defenders to keep the Man City attack at bay. Should have scored a goal for himself if he hadn’t missed a sitter from an Aguero cross.
Riyad Mahrez 9
Really getting more and more accustomed to Pep Guardiola’s tactical setup and it was evident with his performance this afternoon. Mahrez specialised in one-touch football, and his first touches were simply phenomenal.
Sergio Aguero 10
Yet another incredible performance from the Argentine, who was instrumental in Manchester City’s relentless attacking stances throughout the ninety minutes. Aguero scored two beautiful goals while creating a plethora of chances for his teammates. He is arguably Premier League’s best striker at the moment.
Raheem Sterling 8.5
Sterling’s trickery and clever touches once again caused trouble for the opposition. But, what really caught the eye was his combination play with Silva and Aguero. He was rather unfortunate not to score a goal this afternoon.
SUBSTITUTES
Fernandinho 8
Did well to slot in at centre-back after Laporte fell in the first half due to injury. The Brazilian made a couple of important blocks. But, at the same time, it highlights Man City’s need for another centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window.
Ilkay Gundogan 7
Replaced de Bruyne in the 69th minute and helped Manchester City assert more dominance into the game.
Bernardo Silva N/A
Came on for David Silva in the 78th minute and immediately made an impact by scoring the fourth goal. It was an excellent finish after he had initially received the ball from Aguero.
