Chelsea clashed heads with Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park earlier today hoping to end their pre-season with a win. The Pensioners had a poor first half when the home side scored two goals through Alassane Plea and Jonas Hofmann respectively.
However, Frank Lampard’s men came out strong in the second half and managed to get themselves back into the game via Tammy Abraham’s penalty. Ross Barkley came off the bench to score another penalty which helped Chelsea earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against their German opponents.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player performed during the match against Borussia Monchengladbach.
GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga – 4/10
The Spanish keeper was at fault for conceding both of Monchengladbach goals in the first half. However, he put in an improved performance in the second half.
RB: César Azpilicueta – 5/10
The Spaniard struggled to get forward in the first half but found more joy down the right flank in the second half.
CB: Andreas Christensen – 5/10
It was a mediocre display from the Danish centre-back after he failed to keep things tidy early on in the game.
CB: Kurt Zouma – 5/10
The French talent found it challenging to cope with the home side’s fluid movements in the first half. He did enough at the back to earn a shut-out in the second half.
LB: Emerson Palmieri dos Santos – 4/10
It was a lacklustre display from him as he found it hard to make a positive impact in the opposition half.
CM: Jorginho – 6/10
He kept things ticking in midfield and played some decisive passes from the centre of the park. However, Jorginho was a passenger off the ball, which will disappoint Lampard.
CM: Mateo Kovacic – 4/10
The Croatia international had a nightmare first half but managed to earn a penalty in the second.
RM: Pedro – 6/10
The Spaniard should have found the back of the net in the early stages of the contest. His impact on the game faded as the match went on.
CAM: Mason Mount – 6.5/10
The former Derby County playmaker was unlucky not to score on the day. He got some excellent chances to score but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. However, it was a bright performance from him overall.
LM: Christian Pulisic – 5/10
The American tried his best to orchestrate a few openings in the first half. However, he was non-existent in the second.
ST: Tammy Abraham – 7/10
The young Englishman was unlucky not to have scored more than one goal in the game. He will be hoping for better luck when the Premier League kicks off next week.
Substitutes:
LB: Marcos Alonso – 6/10
The Spanish left-back linked up well with others around him and was a decent outlet for Chelsea down the left-wing.
CM: NGolo Kante – 6/10
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner helped his side dominate the midfield by putting in a hard-working performance off the bench.
CM: Ross Barkley – 7/10
The English midfielder came on to net the all-important equaliser from the penalty spot.
LM: Robert Kenedy – 5/10
The ex-Newcastle United talent did not manage to influence the game after coming on in the 67th minute.
ST: Olivier Giroud – 4/10
The French forward squandered a glorious opportunity to score in the second half.
