Reports last month had emerged that Rangers would target (The Express) Leeds United’s Kemar Roofe as a possible replacement for Alfredo Morelos. The Colombian striker has drawn plenty of interest from various quarters, but no formal bids have been made yet. However, it is only right for Gerrard and Co to keep an eye on possible replacements if a transfer for their star striker goes through.
But, Roofe has now been shipped away to Belgian heavyweights Anderlecht. The striker was in the final year of his contract at Leeds United and was available for relatively cheap. Now Gerrard will need to look at other plausible options for Morelos’ replacements and here are three players which he can consider.
Sardar Azmoun
The Zenit St Petersburg striker has been an integral part of his side ever since he joined them. The Iranian international has already started the season brightly as he has four goals and one assist to his name in the first five games. Azmoun has been a prolific scorer for quite some time, and he is a live wire in and around the box.
His pace, dribbling skills and finishing skills make him a standout option. The 24-year-old managed 17 goals and seven assists last season, and he would provide similar intensity to that of Morelos. However, given his form and the fact that he is in his prime, the Iranian international won’t come in cheap.
Florin Andone
The Brighton striker started just eight games in the Premier League last season after he was signed by the Seagulls from La Liga outfit Deportivo in the summer of 2018. The Romanian forward is unlikely to get much game time with Brighton & Hove Albion and Rangers can look to move in for him if they sell Morelos.
Andone’s standout attribute is his strength and composure in front of goal. The 26-year-old is also known for his terrific work rate as he works his socks off every time he is on the pitch.
Miguel Borja
Morelos can be replaced by his countryman Borja who currently plies his trade in the Brazilian top division for Palmeiras. The 26-year-old is a ten-time Colombian international and has similar attributes to that of Morelos. Borja has got impressive pace and acceleration, and he plays with the typical South American feistiness. He also has that physical side to his game which is often necessary to thrive in the Scottish Premiership.
