According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, as cited by Inside Futbol, AS Roma are in talks with Napoli over the potential transfer of Elseid Hysaj. And this could be a massive blow for Tottenham Hotspur, who were keen on the services of the Albanian international this summer.
Hysaj could have been a potential replacement for Kieran Trippier, who joined Atletico Madrid earlier this week. But, how does he really stack up against the England international?
Style of play
Both Trippier and Hysaj are known for their aggression. But, the former is much more adept in offering extensive attacking support in the final third. Trippier is an excellent crosser of the ball while his set-piece prowess is what makes him one of the best right-backs in Europe.
That being said, the ex-Burnley man lacks the defensive aspect of the game. He often appears tentative in dealing with dynamic wingers and is prone to giving away a lot of free space in behind the defence.
Hysaj, on the other hand, has remarkable work-ethic. He is someone who can remain focused throughout the entirety of the game and has leadership qualities about him as well. Another key aspect of the Albanian’s game is his fighting spirit, which could have been ideal for Diego Simeone at Atletico.
Also, the Napoli fullback isn’t the best of crossers and comes nowhere close to the quality of Trippier in terms of offering attacking support from the flanks.
Trippier vs Hysaj: Who is better fitted to Tottenham’s tactics?
Hysaj’s addition to Tottenham will add more balance to the backline, given his all-round qualities in both attack and defence. His leadership qualities could also become useful in a Tottenham defence that will likely rely on the young guns like Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth next season.
Trippier, in contrast, despite his attacking brilliance, often looked susceptible against a well-disciplined attacking unit. He was culpable for many of Spurs’ defensive mishaps last season. Hence, his departure to Atletico could arguably be a blessing in disguise for Mauricio Pochettino as it will allow the Argentine mastermind to pursue a more well-rounded fullback.
Why Tottenham should double their efforts to sign Hysaj this summer
Speaking of well-rounded fullbacks, very few fit the bill better than Hysaj. The Napoli star has become quite an experienced defender, having made 170 competitive appearances for the Partenopei. This could be useful in his bid to integrate to the fast-paced nature of the Premier League next season.
Hysaj is also capable of featuring on the opposite flank, which could make it easier for Pochettino to rotate his squad week in week out. The Albanian international is only 25 and will be a smart long-term investment for the Lilywhites. Therefore, the Lilywhites should definitely look to beat Roma in the pursuit of this highly talented fullback this summer.
