According to renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are close to agreeing on a deal to sign Junior Firpo from Real Betis this summer. The Spanish full-back has been linked with a switch to Liverpool in recent weeks (via Mucho Deporte). However, it seems like Barca are currently in pole position to land Firpo in this off-season.
Romano posted a tweet earlier today which stated, “Barcelona are in advanced talks with Real Betis to sign Junior Firpo as new left back.”
This recent development will be a bitter pill to swallow for Jurgen Klopp’s team. The Reds would now have to continue their search for a new left-back following Alberto Moreno’s departure from Anfield earlier this summer. Firpo was in a rich vein of form in the European Under-21 Championships last month when he helped Spain emerge victorious in the tournament after they beat Germany with a 2-1 scoreline in the final.
Firpo’s Fruitful Spell In Spanish Football
The Spanish talent enjoyed a majestic campaign for Real Betis last season when he put in some impressive displays in the La Liga. The 22-year-old registered three goals while creating five assists in 29 appearances for Betis in the previous term across multiple competitions.
He has also proven his worth defensively after he made an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game for the La Liga outfit last season (Stats via Whoscored).
What Are The La Liga Defender’s Strengths?
Firpo boasts blistering pace, which allows him to make some darting runs down the left-wing. He is also defensively sound at the back and is a difficult full-back to beat when left isolated in 1v1 situations. The Spaniard has added a few goals and assists to his game as evidenced by his attacking returns from the previous campaign.
Losing Out On Firpo: Massive Blow For The Reds?
Firpo has the potential to become a world-class defender in the coming years. Hence, missing out on the Betis star will be a massive blow for Liverpool and their pursuit of a new left-back this summer. Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in a new full-back to push Andrew Robertson, who is currently one of the first names on the Liverpool teamsheet, next season. The Reds will now have to look at other alternatives if they want to strong squad capable of challenging on all fronts next season.
