According to Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of securing the services of Dani Ceballos in a season-long loan deal. The Real Madrid midfielder has been linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu this summer, with a host of clubs interested in his services. But, it is Tottenham, who are expected to sign the Spanish under-21 star as they aim to bolster their midfield options.
The report claims that Ceballos sees his long-term future at Real Madrid. But, he also wants to play regular football for the time being. And with Mauricio Pochettino personally guaranteeing him proper game-time next season, a loan move to North London seems likely.
Ceballos’ contrasting performances for club and country
Ceballos initially moved to Real Madrid in a €16.5 million move from Real Betis back in 2017. But, the Spaniard found it difficult to find regular game-time, having featured in only 396 minutes of league football in his debut campaign.
He did enjoy a much more significant role at the club last season, making 23 league appearances, during which he scored three goals. But, a total of only 1,245 minutes is still highly unacceptable for a player of his quality – quality which was rather evident in his performances in the recently concluded European Under-21 championships.
Indeed, the 22-year-old was an ever-present figure for the Spain U-21 side throughout the tournament, having appeared in all six matches. He scored two goals and assisted another two, helping La Roja win the coveted trophy by beating Germany in the final.
What can Ceballos bring to the table?
Ceballos is a versatile central midfielder, who mainly likes to feature in the number ten slot but can also operate in a deeper role. Unlike a traditional Spanish midfielder, the Real Madrid star can offer energy and urgency in midfield. And this is coupled with his willingness to win back possession for his team that makes Ceballos such a unique component in the middle of the park.
Should Tottenham make a move for Ceballos?
Ceballos will be a welcome addition to the Tottenham Hotspur midfield that has struggled with injuries to key players like Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier and Harry Winks last season.
Although the Lilywhites have revamped their midfield department with the signing of Tanguy Ndombele, the acquisition of someone like Ceballos could further strengthen their depth. Besides, the Spaniard can offer excellent backup for Dele Alli, who has also struggled with injuries this past season.
However, Spurs should at least try to insert some sort of option to buy clause as a mere loan move will only offer them a short-term solution for Mauricio Pochettino, without any prospects for the future.
