According to a recent report by L’Equipe (translated by the Guardian), Tottenham Hotspur have agreed on a fee of €62m (£55.45m) plus €10m in add-ons, to bring Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Tanguy Ndombele to North London during this ongoing summer transfer window.
The same source has also revealed that the Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has made the French midfielder his number one transfer target for this summer which could be why he is willing to smash the club’s transfer record to make the deal happen in this off-season.
Ndombele’s Fantastic Season With Lyon
The Ligue 1 prospect experienced a productive campaign with Lyon after putting in a string of eye-catching performances under Bruno Génésio’s guidance last season. The French youngster made 49 appearances for Lyon in the previous term, finding the back of the net on three occasions while providing eight assists in multiple competitions.
The Longjumeau born talent has already represented France in four international matches so far and has the potential to play an integral role for his nation in the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup. Ndombele can play in multiple positions at the centre of the park. He primarily operates as a central midfielder but is equally comfortable while assuming a defensive midfield role or playing as a winger down the right flank.
What Will The French Sensation Add To Pochettino’s Team?
Ndombele is a good tackler in midfield and has the pace and power to make lung-bursting runs in the opposition half. He has proven his worth in the recent past that he can also be a productive playmaker for his team as evidenced by his stats for Lyon last season. The France international can pick out a killer pass in the final third, which will be a useful tool for Spurs in the upcoming campaign.
The ex-SC Amiens starlet has all the makings of a classy midfielder who has the potential to be a success story at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, there are still some lingering question marks over whether he could handle the physical toll of English football. The addition of a highly-rated talent like Ndombele will undoubtedly improve Spurs’ squad depth and increase competition for players such as Eric Dier, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Victor Wanyama next season.
Hence, we can conclude that the North London outfit have done remarkably well to fend off stiff competition and get themselves in pole position to land the French prospect before the start of the new season.
