According to the latest reports from the Daily Record, Rangers are preparing themselves for a big-money bid for their talismanic striker Alfredo Morelos from German side Eintracht Frankfurt. It is believed that the Bundesliga side had sent representatives to Ibrox to watch the striker in action against St. Joseph’s. The Colombian didn’t disappoint as he bagged a hat-trick in that game.
Frankfurt had checked on the striker last season as well. The Bundesliga side lost Luka Jovic to Real Madrid this season. They recently sold Sebastien Heller for £45m to West Ham United. So one can expect them to go after a striker and they should have the means to pay big money as well. The report also mentions that money is not going to be an issue for the German side, and it remains to be seen whether Rangers can get close to £20m for Morelos.
What makes Morelos special?
The 23-year-old scored 30 goals last season, but suspensions marred his end to the season. This really was a setback to his reputation. However, one just needs to see him play on the pitch once to realise that he is still a significant asset when he gets going.
The Colombian is a feisty character who leaves everything on the pitch while playing. Blessed with decent pace, he can make smart runs in between the defenders. His physical strength also allows him to hold up play well. The striker can score all kind of goals, whether it’s about poaching in front and around the box or carrying the ball and going past defenders to finish smartly.
The only drawback to his game has been his temperament and disciplinary issue. Hopefully, with more experience and maturity, the Colombian will improve on that.
What now for Gerrard?
Gerrard has clearly indicated that all his players are up for sale but only for the right price. Rangers should be in a strong position to negotiate for Morelos as they got him on a new contract just a few months ago. It was clear that it was done for a situation like this.
The manager had said earlier, ”If they (clubs interested in Morelos) do (make a bid) they best bring a really, really big offer. It won’t happen late. A million per cent it won’t happen late, that’s for sure.”
Therefore Frankfurt will have to move in quick if they want to sign the striker. The Scottish Premiership’s transfer window closes in September. So the German side has still got time, which might compel Gerrard to sell Morelos for the right price. Hopefully, the club has a few alternatives zeroed in at this point with Frankfurt mulling over a big bid.
