Recently reports had emerged that Crystal Palace are set to swoop in for Rangers’ star striker Alfredo Morelos. This could have been a worrying sign for the Gers as Morelos has previously claimed that playing in the Premier League is his dream. However, according to the latest reports from the Daily Record, Rangers have rubbished such links, and the Gers claim that they haven’t even received an enquiry from the Eagles for the striker.
Premier League: A dream for Morelos
This should come as a relief for the time being, but things can go downhill if there is an actual interest for Morelos from the English top flight clubs. Morelos had previously said in May (Herald), “I dream of playing in a much better, more competitive league. I look at the English Premier League and the Spanish League. The leagues in France and Italy are very big leagues too and very competitive.”
If there is an actual interest from Palace, then we think that it might unsettle Morelos at Rangers. Gerrard is likely to hold on to him for £20m as managing director Stewart Robertson claimed that they would want a fee in the region of what Celtic sold Moussa Dembele for.
Can Rangers keep hold of Morelos?
Gerrard has been quite clear that all his players are up for sale but only for the right price. Therefore for anyone to land Morelos, they will undoubtedly have to pay top money. There has been an interest in the Colombian international, but none of the bids have been such that Rangers will think about selling.
One of the primary reasons for not receiving a significant offer is Morelos’ disciplinary record and temperament. Just based on footballing ability, there is no doubt to us that Morelos would be worth £20m in today’s market. However, prospective buyers will consider the former HJK Helsinki striker as a gamble given the fact that he was shown the red card five times last season. Without a doubt that is an abysmal stat for a striker.
The forward further messed up his chances for a big move by receiving a red card in the vital game against Celtic when the world’s eye would have been on him. Even when he was back from suspension, the striker lost his place to Jermain Defoe, and the Colombian had a sorry end to the last season.
All this might be concerning, but this can very much work in Rangers’ favour in the transfer market as the club might not get a top bid and Gerrard would be able to eke out another year out of the 22-year-old at Ibrox.
