According to Correiro de Manha, as cited by Daily Star, Manchester United target, Bruno Fernandes prefers a move to Old Trafford this summer. The Sporting CP midfielder has been linked with a host of top clubs across Europe, but it is believed that his heart is set on a transfer to the Premier League giants.
The report further claims that United have identified Fernandes as their top transfer target as they look to bolster their midfield department in the ongoing summer transfer window. However, he will not be considered as Paul Pogba replacement.
Bruno Fernandes is one of Europe’s most sought after midfielders
As stated earlier, Fernandes’ service has been courted by a host of top clubs across Europe including Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur as well as European champions Liverpool. This is mainly due to an incredibly successful 2018/19 campaign.
Indeed, the Portuguese international was the most productive central midfielder among Europe’s top seven leagues last season, having been involved in 50 goals in all competitions. He scored 20 goals in the Primeira Liga, helping Sporting finish third in the league table.
But, Fernandes’ performances were not only prevalent in the club competitions as he also starred for Portugal last month as Selecao das Quinas secured the UEFA Nations League.
What can Fernandes bring to the table?
Fernandes is labelled as an attacking midfielder, but he can operate in a deeper role as well. He juggled between a CM and a CAM role for the most part of last season. But aside from his versatility, the 24-year-old is predominantly known for his proficiency from set-pieces.
Besides, the Portuguese international is also capable of threading through balls in behind the defence and creating a plethora of chances in the final third. Hence, his tally of 13 assists in the league last season comes as no surprise.
Where does Fernandes fit in at United?
Pogba has been a subject of a move to Real Madrid this summer. And the Frenchman’s potential departure could create a massive void in the Manchester United midfield. And although the report claims that Fernandes won’t be considered as a direct replacement for the ex-Juve star, he will go a long way in fixing United’s creative department.
Indeed, the 24-year-old can be slotted in the lone number ten role in Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s 4-3-1-2 formation. Alternatively, he can form the double pivot with either Scott McTominay or Nemanja Matic in case of a 4-2-3-1. Furthermore, the Sporting CP star can also feature as a secondary striker, meaning Solskjaer will be able to deploy him alongside Marcus Rashford in the offensive unit.
Therefore, Fernandes will undoubtedly be a useful addition to the Manchester United setup as the Red Devils look to kickstart a new era under Solskjaer next season.
